Brought Jeppsons Malort for my wife's holiday party over the weekend. Got an email asking who it was from because it was so awful. Hahaha best white elephant gift.

Anyone else been reading Pete Wells' reviews since taking over as lead critic at NYT? Did a pretty interesting take down of Per Se.

Oh my lord, tried this before a Packers game a few months back and it was TUUUUUUURRIBLE. Not even like that harsh just flat bad and the taste lingers. Yeah it has a cult following as like a white elephant type deal. There is a funny YouTube video on it where this guy acts as a spokesperson for it and ends up drinking a bottle, lol...

It is an interesting change in food for the New York Times to be querying fine dining in this manner, it comes across as a kind of "okay, it's good... but it needs to be great to justify it..." which I think is symptomatic of a pretty significant shift.

We're pretty into food, and I've poured a lot of money into fine dining places over the years but I've noticed that when we're out for a fancy evening now the places we're looking to go are definitely more casual now.

Agreed. My wife and I are big foodies and have been to many places like Per Se. We tried to get a reservation there a few months back actually and couldn't so we did a few other NY fine dining establishments. I remember a couple years ago feeling like I had to wear a suit at some of these places cause that's what they said on the website. Nowadays though I wear a nice pair of jeans, a button down shirt and a sport jacket at most. Some times its just a button down shirt and jeans. I do wear nice shoes still though. I think its because those dress up rules are all so old and out of date now.

Yep. I was down there a couple of years ago and that was a highlight of my trip.

I had it the other day. Didn't think it was anything social tbh. The fries were pretty good and the burger was flavorful, but there are so many better burger options. It's 1 step above fast food.

I haven't been there, but I just went to Kopps today for the first time in awhile, and I gotta say, (them also being "1 step above fast food") their cheeseburger with the works and a root beer still beats a lot of the more "hip" best burger joints in town in my opinion.

Think the Winchester is a super underrated brunch spot. Breakfast bowls are really solid. The bloodies are not made from tomato juice, rather pureed. Yellow pepper bloody also available. Flaming stuffed pepper available for garnish among others. Shot of tully with any "premium drink." They deserve more business than they get.
