Gonna be one way traffic for Rafa now I would think.

Berrettini had a great strategy with the drop shot early, but he way overused it. It's not remotely surprising anymore; you can telegraph when it's coming. Young player, not surprising the way he used it, and I'm sure it'll be a good lesson for him.

He just choked on the decision making in that moment. He had been playing forehand dropshots off of good serves when Rafa was standing way way back to return, which is a great strategy. The one he tried in the tiebreak was a backhand dropshot that was a complete bailout shot in the middle of rally. Totally different situation.

Different situations, but not different strategies, even if a shot was in panic. He's trying to draw a deep baseliner to the net to force him into difficult returns, if not no return, or pull him up overall to add lethality to his strong forehand. Overusing the drop shot will help achieve the latter faster, but it's a bold strategy against Nadal. The former is more likely, but it's been done so much now that Nadal is less likely to be caught flat footed.

Sadly, Mexico is just worlds better than the USA.

Berrettini should be pretty good in the coming years, his serve is just so dominant.

Agreed. I'm interested to see to what degree he'll be good. Much like the generation before them, the 'next wave' has kind of floundered - not just against the big three, either - and out of the afterthought came Medvedev, rising from the 50s/60s as of late last year to now be #4 (after this tourney). Along with his Masters finals and wins, that's already more success that Tsitsipas, Zverev, Khachanov have had. I'll be interested to see now if this was a breakthrough for Berrettini to join or form that group of truly next wave guys, or if he and/or Medvedev, like the others, just had a great tournament and will now flounder again.

Not that they have to make SF at every tournament - that's an expectation that needs to be broken post-big three. But someone is going to have to fair better than Tsitsipas and Zverev have. I hope :-?

I'm not her biggest fan but I hope Serena can get the W today. This will be her 4th Grand Slam final since coming back, which is incredibly impressive, but she wasn't able to product a good level of tennis in any of those first three. This is the best she's looked since her return but she has to be able to seal the deal at some point.

I'd be fine with either Nadal or Medvedev winning. I'm rooting for Serena to pass Margaret Court, and then I'll start rooting for everyone else to beat her.

Today's women's final is win-win. I am also rooting for Serena to get the record, but I am also rooting for Andreescu hard core because she's **** awesome. I hope it's a great match.

I have to say it is pretty incredible that these players keep coming out in finals against Serena and just give her absolutely nothing and show zero nerves. Osaka last year, Halep at Wimbledon, and now Andreescu in the early going here.

Serena is broken mentally in these finals now. There is no other explanation.

If Serena needs an easy win to get her mojo back, this was not the match to get it. If Andreescu is nothing else, she is a fighter and was going to go down swinging. But it's looking more and more like she'll win swinging.

Disappointed that it's been this type of match. Really wanted Serena to bring it. She still can but is really running out of time.

These younger girls not being intimidated and having enough power in their game has totally neutered Serena in these big matches. That was her whole game for like a decade.

Andreescu is great, there's no denying that, but this performance from Serena would be like if Rafa came out tomorrow, missed every first serve, and just started dumping returns and basic rally shots into the net. Just so far below the level she's been playing at that it has to be a mental block.

With Serena having the momentum now and the crowd thoroughly on her side, will be interesting to see how Bianca handles this second chance.

ETA: Early return is "not great".
