I don’t understand blaming Bud for the defense when the players were the ones who completely failed to run it. Guys were caught watching the ball all night. Transition D was awful, terrible miscommunication on that end of the floor after some horrendous forced shots/sloppy turnovers on offense.

Half the roster turned over from last year and the team didn’t have any time to practice. Teams are essentially playing shoot around in empty arenas. We’re going to continue seeing plenty of games like this around the league

Honest question, defensive scheme we're running aside, is there a team in the NBA that is actually good at defending the three in the way the Bucks are good at defending the paint? Looking at last year, so we don't have such a large sample size.

A total upheaval of the drop is not what we need, we are stout defending the paint, and I agree with Bud that erasing that is both more feasible and generally more effective.

Problem is when a few guys go full NBA Jam On Fire on us and we don't have anything to at least try to limit the bleeding. He's introduced some small on small switch stuff, but I want more diversity when Brook is sitting.

Not a good analysis. The drop defense is not working against really good offenses. If you want to get eliminated in the playoffs, keep doing what we're doing. No one is saying eliminate the drop defense as a weapon. Just don't do it exclusively. Base it on who you are playing and how the game is going. But if you rarely practice a switching man defense or a helping man defense (which the Lakers use) or a zone defense, then you have nothing to go to when a team is lighting it up. This will become even more commonplace as the three pointer becomes more and more important.

Not a good analysis he says, goes on to basically repeat my analysis he does.

Keep the drop, don't make it exclusive. I agree.

I trust this was Jrue just having a rough night but wasn’t expect to see him struggle and play with a lack of effort like tonight. Giannis was all over the shop too. The amount of times he ball watches or doesn’t help when he should really made the defence look even worse.

No scheme is saving us if those two are bad defensively.

Kidd’s switching defense was good for a year and then others figured it out. Finally kidd left.

Bud focused on let it fly when few teams did that. The percentages worked for us. Other teams started shooting more 3s and recruited more 3 point shooters. So our advantage was nullified.

In defense Bud’s philosophy was to defend the rim primarily because those were otherwise high probability shots. But with better outside shooters of the opponents, the probability of their making 3 pt shots went up a lot. Also more and more 3 pointers were tried against us. So 3 point scores against us became more common. This is the defense’s problem. Just like Kidd’s defense, Bud’s defense has been figured out. Not sure what can be done.

Bud get the blame because his playbook is most likely one page long. :D

Brook Lopez took 12 3-pointers, let that sink in.

For all the woe, our defence is #16 in the league. Not great obv but it’s about as bad as it could be and we’re still middle of the league (offence is #1 for those interested). **** will be right once we shake the cobwebs out properly and give the guys time to gel and learn the system properly (partic the new guys who make up the bulk of the bench).

We do not defended screens at all. You would think in todays NBA defending the 3 point would be more important

Unlike the actual team, it’s nice to see the board develop another defensive strategy this year when the team sucks. “They need time to gel” is a good way to mix it up from “it was a fluke shooting night.”

If the Bucks defense was ranked last after playing two games against the Pistons, one against GSW and one against the Bulls, they might as well focus on the next season.

Blaming the scheme is not results based analysis. People see specific things they do not like and believe they should be improved.
This does not change if the Bucks were 9-0 or 0-9. There are lessons to be learned from last season when people were alarmed about specific scheme/tactics related things regarding the Bucks even when the Bucks were having a 60+ wins season and their concerns were addressed with shallow arguments such as look at the wins, or look at this regular season metric!

People fail to see the that same problems keep popping up when we lose. Thats why have not made the finals despite having the best record over the last few years.

The nba has become unwatchable, which is okay because I can’t watch it anyway.

Jim Owczarski might be the worst journalist I've heard at asking questions. Everything is a ramble on sentence or a leading question that he's practically answering for himself.

I don't like the scheme either but thought the players were overall low on IQ, awareness, and hustle tonight. That includes the stars on the team, who seemed to be more tuned in on getting shots up. Compared to the Jazz we looked selfish, out of sync, and not putting in the work and team play on both ends. Granted this is how the Jazz win at basketball. We need to study and try to become them.
