A note for SupremeHustle that I've trademarked that name. Do I think Donte is a good player? You bet. That's why I put him as a rich man's version of Royal Ivey. At the same time, you just watch him hustle around the court so much, I think it overstates our perception of his impact.

It's not really a good comparison. DDV is a better shooter, better scorer, way better rebounder, similar in creating, and better at getting steals. A closer comparison to Ivey is Snell on defense. DDV is one of the best rebounding guards in the league, like 11th in the league for guards per 36, after filtering those who've played limited minutes.

I think we had one decent possession playing zone and the rest resulted in wide open shots for the Clips. Somebody mentioned it in the game thread but Brook can’t play the zone if he’s being asked to cover the corners.

We let Reggie Jackson control the third quarter which is embarrassing. I believe he scored 15 in the third, he could seemingly do whatever he wanted and I believe Donte was the primary defender.

There was one defensive possession late in the game when Kennard was clearly on a heater. I think he had made three threes in a row, Jrue switches onto him but gives him way too much space and Kennard drains another one. I know it’s not the playoffs so intensity and attention to detail aren’t top notch but a lot of stupid mistakes in this one.

I know this year has been experimental but there are 26 games left before the playoffs.

Ya the 26 games is concerning. There's not a ton of games left to figure stuff out. The defense needs a lot of work. Sometimes they try different things but then the guys dont fit the scheme or no one knows what they are doing and there are breakdowns everywhere.

There is concern they won't get it figured out in time.

Get it figured out in time? They've had three seasons to do that. It ain't gonna happen. This is not a personnel issue. The Bucks have an excellent starting defensive five, yet suck on defense. I wonder what the problem is?

Ivey could actually stop people on D. Ddv is active but when it comes to someone attacking he gives ground without much resistance and gets help from Brook like Middleton does. It looks worse when Forbes does it because he isn't even close to the guy so it's tougher to help when the 1st guy gets blown by.

DDV is good at everything but not great at anything which is a problem as a role player to not have an elite skill. Unless he develops one whether it's shooting, scoring inside or facilitating I don't see him becoming a factor in a playoff series and we'll probably be swept by a team like the Nets.

The main problem I see is that he dribbles in too fast straight into double teams not realizing he's being trapped until it's too late and they close the passing lanes. He's not very long so he can't pass over people. He's not a polished player and needs to be polished.. add a hesitation and change speeds. Try to make the 2nd defender commit before you're too deep so there are still passing lanes or crossover opportunities and if there isn't help take it in strong and draw contact don't always float shots...something besides dribbling straight in and getting stuck in nowhere land which likely only works against a bad team that cares not.

It's not excellent. We tried to but it's tampering.. the Nets can get 5 All Stars and it's not tampering.

Furthermore; Brook- offense and Middleton - defense may have regressed offsetting Jrue being better than Bled.

Also the game was closer than the score showed. We had a lot of nice drives then missed easy lay ins which by the end discouraged the team as they made some contested shots directly after. Several times we'd miss a wide open look and they'd get a putback dunk somehow - boxing out was an issue and those 4/5 point swings were back-breakers. Overall we were tough on Leonard which kept us in it til late.

I didn't watch, but wasn't Defense Specialist commentator BigO saying how happy he was with the zone last game?

And now it's the worst?

Every defense the Bucks used last night was bad. They started out in the usual drop man defense and had to call a quick time out and changed to a switching man without Lopez and quickly grabbed a big lead. They then went back to the drop. It didn't work and they then used everything under the sun. I
If you primarily practice one defense and need to go to something else, you will not be good at it. What worked against the Knicks may not work against another team. That's why you need to practice multiple schemes.

I've said many times on here before, I prefer a helping man defense (rather than a zone) that the Lakers use. They switch with the guards, but when Anthony Davis is part of the high screen, Davis usually doesn't drop back, but shows hard on the screen without switching. They have been number one in defense the last few years.

It's Bud's job to get a decent defense. Since the bubble last year, it's not been playoff worthy.

When a team is missing shots I think to myself "yes, good defense."
When a team is making shots I think to myself "no, bad defense."

The bench.

But we like to ignore that the starting lineup has a DRTG of 107.

Nope. We're down 2 of our best 7 players. If they're completely healthy and look like this come playoff time, then yes I'll be screaming.

PJ is not one of the best 7 players. I've railed on Forbes forever, but at least he does something well. PJ's at best 9th best.

This won't age well I'd guess. PJ is a proven time and time again 3 and D specialist which is exactly what we need next to Giannis everyday and in the playoffs.

Teams in a playoff series will scheme Forbes off the court by attacking him on D, getting him switched onto mismatches and scoring on him over and over like they did to Korver. My guess is the FO hoped Bud could scheme around him and stagger his time with Middleton so there aren't 2 traffic cones on the court at once but he's unlikely to get meaningful time unless something changes drastically with his D so expect a lot more PJ than Forbes as the year goes on.

If you still aren't sure of this close your eyes and imagine Forbes getting destroyed repeatedly by Harden or Kyrie followed by him getting yanked now with a towel on his head trying to figure out what happened. It would be inhumane to play him much in a series vs them and may even ruin his confidence for future years. It's going to have to be PJ, Jrue or idk but not Forbes.
