I think Sabonis can be a contributor on a contending team, of course, he's a good player. The issue is that for what he produces in the boxes, he's always going to get paid big money, so unless he turns it down, it's going to be uncommonly hard to put enough players around him who are as good/better. Portis is a great example in that Portis is making less than 5m to play for a contender with a bunch of guys who are way better than him. Sabonis is better than Portis, but not by enough.

I don't believe for a second that Portland is gonna actually "re-tool around Dame" after the moves they made. This is all just part of the hush-hush agreement they made with his camp so both sides can save face after they predictably strike out on the top free agents (I doubt they make a serious effort anyways). I mean, absolute best case scenario is what? They lure Bradley Beal on a max contract and trade those picks for Jerami Grant? That's probably not even a dark horse contender considering they'd still have to fill out the entire rest of the roster with rookies and guys on minimum contracts/exceptions. Guys under contract on their roster for next year:

I view this trade as a positive, in that now the Sixers can't loot and pillage the Kings for Ben Simmons.

That said, we've still got to withstand whatever Morey comes up with, with another team.

It's a terrible trade by the Kings, no doubts about it. Indy has got a steal.

But Haliburton is also a little overrated by pockets of this forum. He's going to be a very good player for a long time but kinda feels like a Mike Conley level guy to me. But I'm probs wrong. Time will tell I guess (which is why the Kings made such a bad deal. You know what you have in getting Sabonis. It was worth them waiting to see what Haliburton became).

As with so many transactions in the NBA, the Kings are basically just me GMing on 2k when I use trade finder and I know little about the player proposed by the other team but their stats intrigue me.
