July 2, 2013 - 10 year anniversary of JJ Redick/Bledsoe sign and trade

Post#1 » by paulpressey25 » Mon Jul 3, 2023 3:03 am

Many of you remember this infamous day. After three days of lead up that we’d acquire Eric Bledsoe for Redick, we learned that he’d be routed to the Suns. Herb did not want to talk on Caron Butler’s expiring contract, so he took two 2nds instead.

I remember landing at Mitchell from a work trip about 530pm to learn of the details. I logged into the board, and the place was on fire with anger.

https://www.latimes.com/sports/la-xpm-2013-jul-02-la-sp-sn-clippers-trade-20130702-story.html

JULY 2, 2013 12 AM PT

Eric Bledsoe was the centerpiece of a three-team trade in which the Clippers traded the backup point guard to the Phoenix Suns and acquired shooting guard J.J. Redick from the Milwaukee Bucks in a sign-and-trade.

Redick has agreed to a four-deal worth $27 million to play for the Clippers.

The Clippers will trade Bledsoe and small forward Caron Butler to Phoenix for small forward Jared Dudley.

The Clippers and Suns will both send second-round draft picks to the Bucks in the Redick deal.

NBA executives who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter confirmed the entire deal.

Maybe some of you can find threads from that day. I started working on SaveOurBucks the following week.

What lessons would you apply this experience for the franchise to for today?

If your goal is the 8th seed, at least do it competently.

That sums up where we were in 2013. So many years of incompetent 8th seed roster building. It shouldn’t have been that hard, to achieve such a modest goal.

The ironic part about that off-season is we lucked into Giannis in the draft and Middleton as the throw-in on the Brandon Knight trade. But Kohl and Hammond wouldn’t take on Caron’s expiring contract to get Bledsoe because they worried he wouldn’t re-sign here, and they wanted that meager additional cap space to pursue free agents that week.

As you guys recall, we dealt LRMAM for 2nd round picks, traded for Ridnour again, and then signed OJ Mayo, Delfino, ZaZa, Raduljica and Gary Neal. Then did the S&T with Jennings to Detroit for Brandon Knight and Middleton.

Just read those paragraphs above if you’re ‘upset’ about ANYTHING related to the 2023 Bucks.

Here’s the tank squad we eventually fell into that year that netted Jabarles: https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/MIL/2014.html

Edit: forgot how stupid things got that year. Jeff Adrien putting up 11/8 with a 20 USG% is insane.

I edited my post above re Ridnour. I thought we dealt him again, but we actually reaquired him in trade, only to deal him later at the deadline to get Jeff Adrien.

Was still mad that we traded Tobes, but then excited for Bledshow, then let down, again. Emotional rollercoaster.

I wasn't here for this, i also was still on a bucks boycott at the time. (after blowing money for awesome seats in Miami, year after year and the bucks never caring or playing with an ounce of energy I refused to care about them anymore).

I read that trade article 3 times to figure what the bucks got in the trade besides a couple of 2nd rounders... And then I realized...

Yeah, this was coming off the disastrous Tobias Harris trade a few months earlier. I just kept reading Mark Stein tweets saying we’d be getting Bledsoe. Gave us some hope for redemption of the Redick deal.

The irony is that 8 weeks later Kohl then acquired Caron from the Clippers, thus taking on his salary.

100%

If there was a moment that galvanized the need for Save Our Bucks, it was that. Kohl was a great guy, but was completely out of his depth as a pro sports owner.

Even when you take on (or give players) big contracts, when they don't work out a good GM can take those contracts and 1st round picks to acquire players like Jrue Holiday who was a key piece to our championship.

Hence why signing Lopez and Middleton makes sense because one potential scenario if they hit a quick decline is flipping them and more picks for another (hopefully younger) difference maker.

Ah yes. The infamous 2013 season. It's why I changed my account on here to its current name. We were the height of mediocrity in this period. Everything we did was uninspiring.

Logging in for the first time in a while just to respond to this one, what a time that was, probably the most depressing stretch in the franchise's history. A few other memories from that era that stand out and no longer get talked about enough here - useful for perspective:

1) Skiles was canned 1/8/13, replaced by Jim Boylan, but the Redick/Tobes trade (and failed Giannis Pick/Josh Smith trade) happened on 2/21/13 - Redick of course was an upcoming free agent who had already expressed no interest in a long term future with the Bucks, which means the organization decided it was wise to make their all-in, mortgage-the-future moves under an interim staff.

2) We need to talk about the Delfino contract from that offseason. IIRC he was coming off a typical mediocre Delfin-esque year with the Rockets, but had broken his foot very late in the season. Bucks naturally jumped at the chance to sign him to a considerable multi year deal - no clue how much homework was done on the injury - but next thing we know the foot is going to take years to heal, and I'm not sure Delfino ever sets foot (no pun intended) on US soil again.

3) The Delfino comedy of errors then intersected with the Bledsoe mess as well, although a year later. After Dudley was moved to the Clippers in that deal, he was so awful that LA gave us a first round pick just to take him off their hands, even though they didn't really dump salary in the deal - we sent them back the contract for ghost-Delfino. We then took that first that miraculously fell in our lap and tossed it aside like a used napkin in the Greivis Vasquez trade, where the Raptors turned it into OG

It can (and has) been so, so much worse

The Vasquez deal was beyond the pale.

We traded Norm Powell and OG for that cat. Just self inflicted wounds.

This stretch of idiocy by the Bucks turned me into a NBA polygamist. I just couldn't spend anymore mental energy following the team so took a little break. I still rooted for them but didn't follow them as closely.

I grew up in WI a die hard bucks fan but moved to AZ 2002 after college and when the Nash Suns became a thing it was the one local team I actually liked. At that point the Suns were more of my basketball mistress but my Bucks ineptitude break turned it into a full on two favorite teams deal.

Figured it would never matter since they never were good at the same time then that finals happened and it was weird.
