+/- Stats

I use Yahoo's gametrackers most nights, and they seem like one of the few sites that keep track of +/- stats in their box score.
Tonight, at the start of the 4th quarter you had these stats between the two starting SGs:
Mo Williams:
37 minutes
9/17 fg
7/8 ft
26 pts
4 rbs
5 ast
3 to
1 stl
Kobe Bryant
26 minutes
7/18 fg
6/6 FG
24 points
5 rbs
5 ast
1 to
2 stl
Mo was at -8 points, Kobe was at +19. And this was in a close game.
Is there a reason this stat is even kept? Honest question, I'm simply curious. Is there some way to validate its existence in the box score?
