OT: How about a movie thread
We haven't had one of these in a little while. I rented a handful last night, my first time to a Hollywood in a while, so I thought I'd get us started on a classic topic.
I really enjoyed the first two Resident Evil movies. Saw them both in the theater with buddies and thought they were great, mindless fun. I started this one while making diner last night and just couldn't get into it. I ended up shutting it off halfway through. Maybe I'll try again tonight. Doubt it.
Next I watched a movie I'd heard absolutely nothing about. I just saw the title, saw the cast, picked it up.
It's called Sunshine. Came out in 2007 and it's got some real power behind it. Many international stars and some talent behind the camera.
The film takes place 50 years into the future. The sun has started to die off and the Earth is a solar winter. A team is sent up to 'ignite' the Sun by setting off a nuclear blast. Based on the premise I was expecting 'The Core' but it was nothing like it or any other action style disaster movie. Instead, it was more psychological thriller. I don't want to give any comparisons to other films because that would give away much of the eventual plot. Last night I thought that it strongly resembled one particular film (a favorite of mine) and after reading numerous reviews it looks like other people shared my sentiments, for better or worse. So someone else go out and check this film out. I'd really like to discuss it.
I also rented a new one I'd heard much about, 3:10 to Yuma. I started it really late last night but fell asleep. I might watch it tonight but probably not because I also rented Pan's Labyrinth.
I'd seen the front of the box for the film and figured it was a children's movie along the lines of the Chronicals of Narnia or something. Never really gave it any thought. Then I saw the trailer for a horror film 'The Orphanage', dubbed "This year's Pan's Labyrinth" and I realized that a good creep fest might have missed me. I checked it out yesterday (didn't even realize it was a foreign flick) and I saw that it had gotten rave reviews. Very much looking forward to popping it in tonight.
Who else has seen something good recently? Before last night I'd only seen three movies in months:
30 Days of Night (LOVED it, but I'm also a fan of the fiction)
In the land of Women (was with a girl when seeing it but I guess I liked it. No homo.)
Live Free or Die Hard (forgettable)
Other than those I've only watched TV series I got for X-Mas:
Angel Seasons 4 & 5
Firefly
West Wing Complete Series

Just signed up for Netflix last month, loving it so far.
Since my wife hadn't seen Lonesome Dove (the orginial with Duvall, Tommy Lee Jones, and Diane Lane), that is the most recent movie (series) I have seen. Absolutely great for anyone that hasn't seen it (I believe it won 17 Emmy's).
Haven't really seen a lot of new releases lately. SuperBad I think is the most recent I've seen (hilarious as hell, albeit it a little dirty if you have kids).
I guess in general I just watch too much damn sports to really watch more than a movie a week or so.

I saw Pan's Labyrinth over the summer. I was expecting something really good given all the reviews that are out there. I came away relatively unimpressed.
I recently saw I am Legend and was pretty disappointed. It had it's moments, but it just seemed like one of those movies that lives off it's opening weekend. The story itself had so much potential to expand, but they rushed it and put it into theaters much too early.
I saw one of the flicks from Grindhouse. I saw Planet Terror and absolutely loved it. I just enjoy the pervertedness and constant satirical plots. The fact that it's cheesy as hell cracks me up.

I just downloaded Sunshine the other night but have yet to watch it.
In terms of movies from 2007...
Its a common pick for many but "No Country For Old Men" was my favorite movie of the year. Its a significantly better Coen brothers movie than Fargo, has some amazing performances by the actors/actresses involved and is based upon a novel by one of my favorite American authors, Cormac McCarthy.
If anyone hasn't seen it yet, you are really missing out. If you like to read, I'd also give Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian the highest possible recommendation

I've wanted to see that for a while now, I'll be going tomorrow.

Fantastic. One of the best TV mini series ever.

Just saw a lot of movies in the theater recently, all of them were good. I Am Legend was phenomenal for the first 2/3 of it, then got really cheesy. Sweeney Todd, Juno, and Charlie Wilson's War were all VERY good, award-worthy stuff.
Just watched Bourne Ultimatum, also very good stuff.

Saw it last weekend...Daniel Day-Lewis is phenomenal. He's a lock for the best actor Oscar. Pretty intense movie, really well done. I liked it a lot.
I'd put it maybe slightly below No Country for Old Men in terms of the best movies I've seen in a while. Javier Bardem and Tommy Lee Jones are great in that...Bardem should win the Oscar for supporting actor. He's so creepy and weird, absolutely owns that character.
I liked Charlie Wilson's War a lot too. I thought Juno would be right in my wheelhouse, and while I liked it I wasn't totally blown away.

Saw both Juno and Sweeney Todd over the past week.
Sweeney Todd: Usually wouldn't touch musicals with a 10 foot pole, but I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan so I gave it a shot. Turned out to be VERY good. Surrounded Depp with a very good cast and the story was interesting throughout.
Juno: Michael Cera is the man. Period. First Arrested Development, then broke out on the movie scene with Superbad, and now this. Ellen Paige plays her role very well also. Damn they made her look young. She looked about 5 years younger than she did in X-3. Wierd thing with the soundtrack...I wouldn't listen to that thing on it's own, ever. Yet at the same time it was very in-sync with the movie. Wierd. Anyone else experience something like that when watching a movie? Like someone else noted earlier, the script is very well done.

I for one can't wait to go see Cloverfield this Friday. I'm curious to see what is destroying New York. I'm a huge action movie person. Some movies I can't wait for to come out
1. The Dark Knight (new chapter in the Batman series)
2. Rambo
3. Iron Man
Then of course sometime after fall, theres the new James Bond movie, and Indiana Jones is returning. Should be interesting. Lots of good movies to be seen in the next year or so.

Yes, I've heard that Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic. That's definitely on my must see list.
Almost all of the performances in No Country were stellar. Tommy Lee Jones is great even though he seems like he is playing Tommy Lee Jones.

The Bardem character is definitely one of the best performances in recent memory. "If the rule you followed brought you to this, what good is the rule?" So great.
I can't wait to see the film version of Blood Meridian because there's a character in that book that makes Anton Chigurh's creepiness look like kid's play if you can believe it.
Another good 2007 movie was Before the Devils Knows Your Dead - sort of a heist-gone-wrong type movie mixed in with a very bleak dysfunctional family drama told in a not entirely linear way (switches between characters more than just progressing uniformly in time). Only thing that took away from me enjoying it was Ethan Hawke. I always thought he was a bad actor but its even more obvious when is no the screen with a good one in Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

I don't get a chance to get to the theater very often but Netflix is my best friend. I finally saw Superbad and laughed pretty much the entire time. The scene where the kid sings "These Eyes" is one of the funniest moments ever. I just watched "Once" which was really amazing I thought. Someone of a romance, but I loved the music and the story.
DB you should definitely give 3:10 to Yuma another shot. I really enjoyed it. Im a huge fan of westerns though, so I guess its possible that someone who isn't might not enjoy it as much as I did.
Big props to those that mentioned Lonesome Dove. Larry McMurtry FTW

HAHA YES! Superbad is def an instant classic for me. I like the part when he gets hit by the car the first time. He sounds so funny when he askes whats going on.

My prediction I gave to my girlfriend was that is was gonna end up being a baby or something stupid and then it turns into a comedy. Boy that would suck. Though it would be better than it being Godzilla. That'd be too predictable.
