ESPN's Stein: No Redd Trade Until Offseason At Earliest

Post#1 » by europa » Thu Jan 17, 2008 4:27 pm

From Marc Stein's chat today:

Mike (Milwaukee, WI): Lots of chatter on Redd trades and Bucks trades in general, at least in the local media. Is there any fire behind the smoke?

SportsNation Marc Stein: (11:24 AM ET ) Trading Redd, as noted in the last Weekend Dime, is something that the Bucks won't even look at until the offseason . . . barring an unlikely philosophical change in the next month-plus before the deadline. They could have (and should have) made the Zach Randolph trade with New York.

Marc Stein is a moron, Randolph would hinder Bogut and Yi's development to the utmost degree. That move would have been horrible.

It would've been a great trade....for a fantasy basketball team.

Here in the real world it would've been quite stupid.

I don't see Kohl approving a deadline deal for Redd.

He will have to think long and hard about that one.

I have a feeling the snake is going to rear his ugly head and we will see a trade noone saw coming.

Anyone who says a team made a mistake by NOT acquiring Zach Randolph is just simply not worth my time. I know we would have lost two bad contracts in the deal, but we also acquire the worst chemistry player in the entire league, with three more years AFTER this year on the books.

He just pointed out why Redd WILL be traded:

Someone tell Mark to pop in the tape of a Bucks game since the start of the new year and then ask him if he sees a 'philosophical change'.

I'd like another week or two before saying it with 100% certainty, but it appears this has gone from Redd's team to Andrew's team.

He's talking about a philosophical change with regard to how Kohl operates. He wrote last week that it's not in Kohl's nature to make a move like this during the season. The Ray trade is the notable exception and given how many fans bemoan that trade to this day, that's likely to make Kohl even more apprehensive about trading Redd now.

I also think Kohl's reluctance to deal Redd now is he doesn't want to entrust such a move to a GM who may be gone after the season ends. He may want to bring in a new GM and allow that person to decide if Redd should be traded.

Thomas was also dealt in a deadline deal. That's two max guys being shipped out. I don't think he's apprehensive at all about dealing during the season.

I doubt the Ray Allen trade is keeping people from coming to see the Bucks. Perhaps it's the fact that we haven't brought in another 'name' since then, but Redd isn't filling up the seats. If anything, Kohl could trade him for someone that could.

The point about Kohl not wanting to sign off on a deal until he gets a new GM may be valid, but that's speculation. If Kohl knows Harris is gone, why not fire him right now? Isn't he wasting valuable time (trade deadline, NBA Draft and scouting, in house talent evaluation, coach performance evaluation) then? These are things your new GM could be doing.

Yes.

Off the top of my head, I'd say the major impetuses for making deals near the deadline are

a) you're a contender needing a final piece
b) you're a playoff also-ran looking to make a run at a spot
c) you have expiring deals that have trade value to other teams now but not in the summer
d) you're looking to pick up expiring deals for cap reasons
e) you have a cancer-type that you just need to get rid of ASAP.

I'm probably missing some, but I'd say the Bucks only really figure into b) and it's not necessarily easy to both get value AND have the guy integrate seamlessly into your existing group of players. Voskuhl is our only expiring deal of any note, and it's not a huge one, so the opportunity cost of not using him in a deal isn't as high. Come the summer we may very well have a new GM and we'll know where our draft pick is. It'd likely be easier to structure a big trade involving Redd (or anyone else) at that point, since many teams are hesitant to pull a big deal unless something is really wrong or one of the other above reasons exists.

Agreed fam. The bottom line is Kohl is not prone to making a move of this magnitude during the season. Tim Thomas wasn't as good as Redd or viewed as highly within the organization as a foundation piece so that analogy doesn't hold up. The last time the Bucks traded a player of Redd's stature on the team was when they traded Ray - and that's a trade many Bucks fans to this day lament. I believe that will impact his decision although it is worth noting that for the first time he does seem open to the possibility of trading Redd.

As far as Harris, maybe Kohl simply doesn't know if he wants to keep Harris or not. If that's the case, entrusting him to make this type of major deal doesn't make sense since Harris could screw it up and ruin the team even more. That would put the next GM at a greater disadvantage when it comes to making whatever moves need to be made to improve the team.

none of the ESPN analyst don't even know whats going on here....the only bucks news they know of is the rumors we hear or read on sites like hoopshype.....just like when R.Bucher said we never saw Yi play before we drafted him...they don't follow this team and know nothing about our situation they try to act like they do by saying common sense crap.

Unfortunately, I think Stein is right. I just can't see Kohl letting Harris trade any of the major players on this team in his lame duck last season. Until we have a new GM Redd will likely be here. The most I can see happening is CV being moved (only because he asked for the trade) in a small deal.

Redd should be dealt sooner rather than later, but it will not happen.

And I do think there could be exceptions--if something like a McGrady deal availed itself, then Kohl could certainly sign off on a major deal sooner. But the odds of finding a no-brainer for Redd aren't that high...teams aren't going to line up to swap their superstars for him. It'd have to be a unique situation where a team got somewhat desperate and Redd would be a good fit. It sounds like all the McGrady/Redd talk is coming from our end right now, so I am not going to get my hopes up there. Still, depending on CV and a 1st rounders' inclusion, you could easily draw up a deal very favorable to the Rox.

As for smaller deals, I'm not sure why we'd only deal for a guy like Pietrus now...a SF deal should have been done a month ago if we were going to do one. Why you'd wait for Mason to come back is beyond me, though who knows how the market might have changed over that time as well.

I'm very curious to see what if anything happens with Tyrus Thomas...

Ok seriously, I don't understand this perception on this board. Harris job is to talk to other GM's and see what they are offering and to look for trades on the surface. I'm sure every offer he gets, he then takes to the cronies and Kohl to get their take. Its not like he makes the decision basically on whether to go through with a trade. I'm not sure he ever has even on small deals. From my understanding of the operations, everyone has to agree on the deal so no matter what, who cares if LH is in charge because the next guy will have to go to the damn lawyers too. The only way that doesn't happen is if Kohl hires a Colangelo type who demands full control.

I would beg to differ with you about your opinion of ESPN writers. yes, much of the time they are just putting out speculation. however, a lot of that speculation is fueled by actual inside sources. and sometimes an owner wants to get a public oppinion feedback, so he'll leak a trade several weeks ahead to see what the sentiment will be.

Kohl and isaih can deny it all they want, but the Randolph trade was actually on the table. We have found out that several other deals were on the table in the past that the bucks' owner and GM denied.

Just like it takes two people to have a fight, there is always some truth to every rumor. I can't see redd being traded or harris making any meaningful trade before the deadline that is going to propel the Bucks into the play-offs. I' m not even sure if Harris/Kohl will make a major overhaul this summer. the bucks might get lucky in the draft and jus t say our #1 pick is that missing piece to the puzzle and make no moves. that would be a big mistake. But it wouldn't shock me if the bucks stood pat.

Even though it might cost us some lottery balls this season, it might be better to wait till draft day. Teams are much more apt to deal high picks where they know exactly what position they are. Over the last couple years there has been big draft day deals with teams looking to win now. Rudy gay from Houston, B Wright from Charlotte, and Green from the C's.

I'm of the opinion that LH will make no blockbuster deals this season. The only way a big trade happens in Milwaukee is if Kohl does it; I wouldn't hold my breathe but who knows, stranger things have happened. There may be reasons for Kohl to do something that we, or at least I, aren't privy to know.
