Since We Love To Analyze Quotes

Post#1 » by europa » Mon Jan 28, 2008 3:43 pm

Here's one from Mo after yesterday's game talking about the botched play at the end of regulation:

"I'm comfortable from the three-point and in my head I always want to make sure I get the last shot with the game tied."

Given the discussion that occurred after Redd's remarks following the Pacers' game, I'll be interested to see the comments regarding this quote from Mo.

Discuss.

Well, ever since mo made those two last second shots two years ago, he feels like he is the best player on the court to make the clutch shot. I agree with this, but it can't be dribbling for twenty seconds and then shooting a pull up three. That's just making it too easy for the defense. Now, if we run a play to free up mo for an open shot at the end of the game, I'm fine with him shooting the last shot.

In fairness to Mo and Redd, there aren't many teams in the league that give the last shot to a big man or whatever, it usually is one of the two guards or a specialist three point shooter. I would hope though if by some miracle the team gets a big time clutch three point shooter they would be willing to give that guy the shot instead of looking for their own glory.

"He's a gamer. He's there for his teammates and will do anything to help this team win. If it means making sure he gets the last shot because he's the best offensive option on the team, so be it."

Theres nothing to read into, IMO. Hes saying that he feels comfortable and wants to take the clutch shots. Nothing ground breaking there. Is there a guard in the League that doesn't feel the same way?

'make sure?' I don't mind him feeling confident taking the shot, i like it in fact as every team needs guys who want the ball in the clutch, however I don't like the selfish implication this could give. It might just be his phrasing I suppose, but I don't want him ignoring better options to shoot it himself. That so called 'play' at the end of regulation was disgraceful, although apparently Yi missed his assignment as he was meant to pick high.

While nobody is perfect from the field in clutch situations, Mo has proven he is comfortable and steps up in clutch situations. While I wasn't crazy about the shot he took. At least he took it with 3 or 4 seconds to go and left Washington with no time. Regardless, Mo did come through in the clutch again last night with 2 huge three's in OT.

I did enjoy watching Tony Brown after every Mo turnover

I think the key part here is "with the game tied." I believe Mo meant that if the last shot doesn't go in with the game tied, the opposition doesn't have enough time to call a timeout and a set up a play of their own to win in regulation. If he misses - it's OT.

someone seems to be trying to read too much into this to infer something about mo. who would do such a thing?

Someone who is curious if the same standards will be applied to Mo that are applied to Redd.

Bingo. OT at worst. Despite the TO numbers last night, Mo is still our surest ballhandler. He's confident that he won't turn it over, or shoot too early giving the other team a chance to win.

Everyone including my grandma knew that Mo would dribble out the clock and just pull up for a contested 3.

Down right terrible. I don't know whats worse. The fact that he took the shot in that fashion or my worry that Larry K actually called that crap.

The play was actually a high pick and roll with Yi. Yi, didn't understand and never went to set the pick. Yi screwed up the play, and Mo did the right thing. He got to overtime and then won the game for us.

Yea, that's what I'm doing. Thanks for the laugh.

What's really funny is how the standards are never applied equally when it comes to Mo and other players on this team. As far as I'm concerned, if you had problems with Redd's comments after the Indiana game, this quote from Mo should bother you as well. If the standards were applied equally, Mo would be roasted for this quote just like Redd was roasted for his. I already know how this thread will unfold but I figured I'd toss it out there anyway for entertainment value. :)

Oh, and before people start making up things they believe I said - I didn't like Redd's comments after the Indiana game.

The difference here is that you are clearly misinterpreting Mo's quote. It's really hard to misinterpret everything that Redd said after the game against Indiana.
