OT: McNamee and Pettitte vs. Clemens Live on the Hill

Post#1 » by Mags FTW » Wed Feb 13, 2008 3:56 pm

Happening right now, and they are grilling Clemens. High tension. McNamee is sitting 2 seats over from Clemens and they are basically calling each other liars through their testimony one after the other. Clemens also said Pettitte "misheard" him when Pettitte claimed Roger told him he used HGH.

I should mention Pettitte isn't actually there, but they are reading his sworn statements from him and his wife that completely contradict what Clemens is saying. It's hilarious because before today Clemens' lawyer said Pettitte was one of the most honest people in baseball.

Wow, the Pettittte stuff is making Clemens look like a goddamn fool. I don't know how he recovers from this.

Roger Cosack on ESPN radio said it best. This has turned into a trial against Roger Clemens and it's completely unfair. He isn't being allowed a jury, he isn't allowed to face his witnesses, there isn't any cross examination. I think it's disgusting what congress is doing and they should all be ashamed of themselves.

I was too, but now they're finally face-to-face and contradicting each other with their testimonies.

It's important to remember the reason this is happening publicly is that Clemens specifically wanted it. To the extent that Clemens never had a chance of clearing his name once the Mitchell Report came out, you're right he's basically been on trial. But to the extent that this specific hearing is unfair, it's largely self-inflicted.

Yup. This is from Jayson Stark's blog on ESPN:

Rep. Waxman said he wanted to cancel the hearing and just issue written reports. But Clemens' lawyers helped talk him out of that, saying it would be "unfair" to cancel the hearing without giving Roger a chance to testify publicly.

No sympathy for Clemens from me for a number of reasons.

Honestly does congress have nothing better to do than grill MLB about steroid use? And Arlen Spector talking to Roger Goodell about Spygate? Honestly? That's **** up.

The argument against my stance is that once Clemens began denying he was ever involved with the PHDs, he essentially invalidated the Mitchell Report, thus Congress had to act. The Mitchell Report was theirs. I can see that.

But it still seems vindictive and wrong. I don't like the way they're going about this.

By the way, I'm certainly not a fan of Clemens. But I'm also not a fan of holding trials in the media and him not getting a fair shot at clearing his name.

Agreed. He brought this on himself. If he is truly innocent and wants any degree of vindication he can sue McNamee and/or Pettitte for slander. But then all of those people/pieces of evidence from the Mitchell report will nail his ass to the wall.

OMG, be prepared to hear the phrase "mass on his buttocks" for the rest of the week...

In seriousness, that's pretty damning evidence.

Wait, I missed some of that part. What does the mass on his buttocks prove or not prove?

You also need to remember that Mitchell offered to talk to Clemens beforehand. One of the congressmen on ESPN said that another player had been implicated but was removed from the report because he was honest with Mitchell.
