WHY play Awvee Storey instead of Ramon Sessions?

Post#1 » by GrandAdmiralDan » Thu Mar 6, 2008 11:01 am

Seriously.
This happened in the Sonics game, but I didn't want it to get lost in the post game thread, especially if it happens again in subsequent games.

I see absolutely ZERO reason to play Awvee Storey in a game instead of Ramon Sessions, considering the makeup of the Bucks roster. What is the point?
There is no benefit to be gained by giving minutes to Awvee Storey, whereas it would be helpful to see if/how Sessions' success in the NBADL can translate into the NBA in some fashion. And it is possible that we could find that Sessions could be better at running our offense than either Ivey or Bell (at this point I find it likely). I'd like to see how Sessions runs an offense AND how he defends opposing PGs.

Why did we bring him up from the NBADL if we aren't going to play him?
Storey is not any kind of long term asset. Neither is Ivey, frankly. I'd sooner play Sessions than either of them right now, but certainly I'd play Sessions instead of Awvee Storey.

I don't see an argument for playing Storey at SG rather than sliding Bell up to SG and giving Sessions the minutes that Bell abdicates at PG.

Sessions is less likely to assualt the coaching staff than Storey (or Mo for that matter).

I do find it frustrating, though. Sessions was doing extremely well in the D-League, if you aren't going to play him then just send the kid back.

I was puzzled by it as well, my only thought was that Lk was trying to outmuscle the sonics by playing the heavy storey and bell instead of the presumably light sessions. And yes this makes little sense to me either, but it's the only possible thought I had.

I wish I could say that I was surprised that Sessions got no run despite Mo being out last night. But sadly I wasn't. I pretty much expect this team to make ignorant decisions across the board at this point.

Hmm.
I'm shocked the last poll option got a vote already. Maybe Awvee Storey has himself a RealGM account ;)

So, no one is even considering the fact that that Sessions is coming off a broken hand?

No, it has to be the "Bucks are stupid"

Yeah, let's throw Sessions out there when he's not ready so he can rebreak his hand. Thats the smarter idea.

Well I do think this option has a far less likely chance of being wrong than any other.

The Bucks would be stupid to even activate him if there was a larger risk to injure his hand than normal.

Wouldn't you think?

So in either scenario they seem pretty stupid.

It's possible that he's ready to practice, but not ready to play in a game.

Perhaps the Bucks wanted him on the sidelines, watching games, participating in practice and getting a feel for the NBA game instead of languishing in NBADL.

Remember, this kid has never played a game in the NBA before.

But everyone on here is ready to anoint him as better than Charlie Bell, better than Royal Ivel, better than Mo, because he tore up the D-league and the scouting report on him is that he can "make an entry pass"

I'm just as excited as the next guy to have a defender in the backcourt. But expectations need to be tempered for a second round pick who has never seen the floor during an NBA game.

Yeah, exactly.

Sorry ESBF, but thinking there is a concern about Sessions rebreaking his hand isn't a reasonable concern on a night where he was put on the ACTIVE list for the first time in his NBA career. If there is that kind of a risk, you put the player on the inactive list.

Even if you would intend not to play that player, there are rare instances where you would be forced to, such as if another player was supposed to shoot a free throw but was unable to due to injury or getting himself ejected before shooting the free throw, then the opposing coach could choose any player from your active list and you'd be forced to sub them in the game. He could shoot with the other hand I guess and then after the free throws we could intentionally foul just to get him back out of the game, but why put ourselves in the position to have to maybe do that if he isn't ready to play?

I'm not anointing him as anything other than a rookie second-round draft pick. However, I know what Ivey is at this point in the season and Storee isn't anything special either so I'd like to see what Sessions can do. I personally think it's stupid to bring him up and not play him when the opportunity presents itself. If there is no intention of playing him than he should be back in the D League working on his game.

Yes, that is possible.

Considering the Bucks current circumstances, I don't think that makes much sense though.

What is the upside of not giving him some PT at this point? What is the benefit to the Bucks and why does that outweigh the benefit of giving him some NBA minutes?

EastSideBucksFan wrote:But everyone on here is ready to anoint him as better than Charlie Bell, better than Royal Ivel, better than Mo, because he tore up the D-league and the scouting report on him is that he can "make an entry pass"

I don't find this to be an accurate representation of what people are saying. Look at the poll results. So far, only one person that voted wants to see Sessions get minutes at the expense of Charlie Bell. The poll does not indicate exactly whether people who voted would want Sessions to get minutes at the expense of Mo Williams, but I'd be surprised if people wouldn't want Sessions to get minutes at the expense of Bell but WOULD want Sessions to get minutes at the expense of Mo. I suppose that is possible though.

7 of 13 so far would rather see Sessions get minutes at this point than Royal Ivey.
That doesn't say whether or not those people think Sessions is necessarily better than Ivey at this point (though some might think that, I certainly think that is a strong possibility). What it says is that they want to see Sessions get minutes at the expense of Ivey, considering the circumstances. We have yet to see what Sessions can do at this point in the NBA. We'll need to find out at some point. We know what we have in Ivey at this point, and his future with the Bucks is of little consequence. If we want to bring him back, we already have enough data to base that decision on.

Oh, and the impetus of this thread was that Sessions should get minutes instead of AWVEE STOREY. So in regards to Sessions, while I personally am not "ready to anoint him as better than Charlie Bell, better than Royal Ivey, better than Mo" without seeing Sessions in NBA games (and I'd like to see so I can start to figure that out), I AM ready to anoint Ramon Sessions as better than AWVEE STOREY.
I'm willing to go out on that limb ;)

EastSideBucksFan wrote:I'm just as excited as the next guy to have a defender in the backcourt. But expectations need to be tempered for a second round pick who has never seen the floor during an NBA game.

I absolutely agree that expectations need to be tempered (just not mine).

The fact that he has never seen the floor during an NBA game is part of the point here though. That needs to change so that a better assessment of Sessions can be made AND perhaps he starts developing as an NBA PG a little.

I am not one who is already of the belief that Sessions is the Bucks starting PG of the future in waiting, I am just certain that it is more productive for this franchise to give Sessions minutes than it is to give Awvee Storee minutes.
So I am for damn sure not going to temper THOSE expectations.

If I can't reasonably expect that Sessions is going to be better than Storey, than I'm not sure I can reasonably expect ANYTHING in this world :)

The Bucks have an 18 shot minimum for any guard on there roster and the buzz is that he is coming nowhere near that in practice

I heard he was spending far too much time trying to run the offense and create for his teammates. He was called into a meeting and told he'd have no chance of playing until he got that ridiculous team-first approach out of his system.

Now you know how I feel when I read all the allegedly humorous comments directed at me that get so much love in this forum. Maybe we could all go on the road together.
