So I turned on my laptop the other day but I got this strange message it said:

missing or corrupt <windows root>\ system32\ hal.dll re-install.

I didn't know what to do so I googled it and it seems that I am not the only one that has had this problem. Some people from computer tech sites said put in the windows xp cd in and repair it...I got as far as putting the cd in and going to repair but after that I do not know what to do can any one here help me out?

All my important stuff is in that laptop...if it has to be erased then so be it but does anyone know how to repair it with the operating system cd.

Well, you could try and download the correct file from another computer for the correct operating system and copy it over. Otherwise, insert an operating system disk, reboot and do a repair install? It basically reinstalls the entire OS, but leaves your settings/desktop/programs as is.

I've done what sobo suggested before. Just reinstalled windows entirely. Instead of booting off of the hard drive I told the computer to boot off of the cd drive. It read the install disc and just installed everything again and I didn't lose any info.

just put the original windows cd in the drive and when you boot your computer up choose the option to boot the cd instead of going to the desktop.

I don't know why that was so funny (maybe because it was probably necessary for you to add the j/k), but either way, it made me laugh out loud in a room full of people.

Now everyone thinks I'm crazy.

Thanks a lot.

ok I fixed it it was more simple then I thought all I had to do is put in the XP cd and reinstall the entire program...while it re-installed it automatically made copies of my files...

I just gave up and thought it was going to reboot all the way but things turned out great for me.
