Chad Ford Speculates On GM Opening

From his chat today:
Steve (chicago): Hey Chad, who's going to be the Bucks next GM?
SportsNation Chad Ford: (1:08 PM ET ) First of all, I feel sorry for Larry Harris. It appears like he wasn't totally allowed to do what he needed to do in Milwaukee. I've always thought he was one of the brighter young GMs in the league. I think he'll find a new job quickly.
As for the next Bucks GM? I think Senator Herb Kohl is going to have a hard time getting a top tier candidate there like Donnie Walsh or Kiki Vandweghe. With so many potential jobs opening up (New York, Atlanta and potentially Denver and Indiana) the top experienced candidates will probably wait this one out. I've heard Rick Sund and Doug Collins names mentioned in the media. No offense to either guy ... but please. The Bucks would be better off going after an assistant GM who's been mentored by one of the best. Detroit's John Hammond, Indiana's David Morway and the Spurs Dennis Lindsey should be the guys.

If we hire Rick Sund I'll drink a pint of Jack and drive my car off a bridge.

I agree 100%. I would rather have an assistant GM with a winning organization than a turd like Sund. Kohl is going to have to sell whoever it is to the fans. How in the hell do you sell the fans Rick Sund?

My worry about going after one of the young GMs without experience is they may find themselves in the same boat as Harris, i.e. being hamstrung by Kohl and the inner circle. We need a respected basketball man that Kohl can hand the keys over to.

It's a catch 22. No respected guy wants to come here and any of the younger guys will be, as stated above, in the same jam as Harris.

I actually agree with Ford, I don't see a big name coming here....Collins is an absolute joke, the only reason anyone would want him is because they are familiar with his name...as far as the young guys go the question is would they have full power? The answer is obviously no......the ownership will simply keep this franchise terrible.

The real problem is that those "respected" guys don't want to come to Milwaukee.
Unless Kohl opens his pocketbooks and steps back once the GM is hired.
Those are two huge IF's
But IF he wants to win the fans back, that is what he must do.
Go big on the GM
Go big on the Coach
Get out of the way

If the Bucks can't get Walsh - and I agree that I wouldn't expect that to happen - I'd like to see them go after Lindsey or Hammond. Both are young guys on the fast track and come from organizations with a proven record of championship success. My preference is a proven GM but if that can't happen then someone like Hammond or Lindsey would be far more preferable in my opinion than someone like Collins or Sund or (Lord help us) Babcock.

I would easily take Babcock over Collins and Sund......althought all 3 would be mistakes.

I would too but that would be like saying I'd rather have Stotts than Krystkowiak.
Sorry epi and bigzy.

I was going to suggest Dennis Lindsey in the GM brainstorming thread, but then forgot. Plus, as DB mentions someone like Lindsey would probably find themselves in the same boat Harris did.
If Kohl would definitely change his ways, I'd be all for someone like Lindsey.
But I figure that anything Lindsey will want to do, Kohl will think to himself "I better run this by Ron, Mike, and John. They've got more NBA experience."
Now, he may find an excuse to meddle like that even with someone like Donnie Walsh, I just think that at least we have better odds of Kohl interfering less with someone like Walsh.
BTW, if Rick Sund ends up being hired as GM, I've already got a headline for fam's entry for it on BrewHoop.com
Above the story, show a picture of Kohl addressing the media, with a picture of Sund right next to it, and right above that, a big headline that just says "RICK ROLLED"
Maybe clicking on the pictures starts playing the embedded YouTube video of "Never Gonna Give You Up"

Actually, I might have to use a "Rick Roll" headline even if we hire Carlisle (who I like) as coach. It's too good of a reference to pass up.

Hmm.
I didn't even remember that thread.
Looks like I thought the title was funny at the time too.
I thought this was a semi-original idea that popped into my head, but looks like there was a reason it may have been floating around my head.
Oops.
