I know he does not defend, but his play and unselfishness would help our offense (particularly Bogut and Mike) a lot.

Not so many guys in this league would do what he did. He puts the team first, then his teammates and him only in the end. That's why I would love to see him here; not only for his very very good numbers.

how is it diverted? the thread is about how he thinks calderon would help the team even though he doesn't play d. isn't it?

edit: that is a cool story though, i would imagine the raptors will be trying to keep him around

This thread is about: I would like to have a guy that is not a good defender, ok, but he cares only about winning and not stats, he passes first, he would make better both Andrew and Mike...

It's an interesting story, you don't hear about it happening too much in the NBA.

I've liked Calderon ever since I saw him playing in an international game a few years back where he had gone scoreless the whole game on about 0/6 shooting. His team was up by a decent amount and in the last minute of that game he twice had the ball on 2 on 0 fast breaks and happily gave it up to the same bench player to score instead of just taking a lay up himself. Jose finished the game with 0 points, and I thought "he's cool".

Calderon at this time is a very poor defender, what he has that the Bucks lack is a very high basketball IQ.....is that enough? I am not sure, it would be better than what the Bucks have now but not sure if you are building a championship.

i agree that he would help the offense, he wouldn't provide that much of a scoring spark if redd and bogut were having off nights though

I disagree with that. He's a 53% FG shooter who shoots 45% from 3-point range. He is an outstanding shooter. He simply has the mindset of a PG so he doesn't look to force his own offense. You probably didn't watch the game last night but the Raptors went with a Ford-Calderon backcourt for extended minutes and it worked extremely well and had the Pistons puzzled. Ford was penetrating and Calderon was spotting up. That's a risky backcourt because neither one of them is a good defender (I agree with you about Calderon's poor defense) but I think if the Raptors want to go far in the playoffs they may need to take that risk and play the two of them together more. It presents a lot of challenges for the defense and can really open up the offense having two strong PGs on the court.

those are good %'s, but if he doesn't have to do much creating of his own shot, and can rely on open jumpers on ball swings, that factors into his % a lot. but at least he can hit the open ones.

He is more like Bogut. He makes shots, because he takes higher % shots. Not a volume shooter. Really good teammate.

The Raptors face a choice this offseason and i would put it at least at 50/50 that they try to trade Ford and keep Calderon.

Besides the health issues, Toronto has played much better when Ford was out injured. Maybe for health worries they would struggle to move Ford, but i wouldn't just assume they let Calderon go and keep TJ.

I agree with what you say, but look at the Celtics: they are the best defense in the league, but they have a lot of poof defenders. Ray, Sam I am, House, Pierce... Their backcourt isn't that good defending the basketball, but they have a huge force in the middle in KG and a great defensive coach in Thibodeaux. I believe we could improve a lot defensively by adding 1 or 2 backcourt players who can defend and a good defensive coach, and a lot offensively by adding Jose.

Redd would have to go if he was our starting PG. We have learned our lesson haven't we? Michael Flowers would be a good pick up for us. If he goes undrafted the Bucks should give him a look.

I am thinking about Mo traded for Jose and a frontcourt with an athletic very good defensive SF. Any ideas for the SF? Right now I don't have a name.

Calderon won't go anywhere this off-season.....The team with cap room in the Sixers already have Andre Miller and I'd guess Calderon signs a 5-6 year extension at $8-9mm per year.

Nope, no chance the Raptors let Calderon go - especially in light of Ford's injury situation. It's way too risky to go with Ford alone. Now if the Raptors could work a S&T involving Calderon and also land a quality PG either in the draft or through another avenue that would be something to consider. But I think one of two things happens this summer:

1. Calderon signs for slightly less than what Ford got and the Raptors stick with the Ford/Calderon backcourt which has been quite successful and resulted in plenty of success. If they go that route I think they would figure out ways to get Ford and Calderon on the court together more.

2. Ford is traded.

If I was a betting man at the present time I'd bet on No. 2. I think Ford is the superior player with a vastly higher ceiling but he also comes with considerably more risk. I think the Raptors may need to play it safe and go with Calderon and then try to deal Ford for something they need - like a SF. I could see a Ford to Portland for Outlaw trade being a very good one for both teams.
