A few more names from Ford during his chat today:

Pat (Oshkosh): Chad, any rumors on who will be the GM of the Bucks? Will anyone want the job?

SportsNation Chad Ford: I'm not sure they'll be able to persuade a top tier candidate to come there. They're probably better off going with someone who's been mentored by a top tier GM. Someone like the Pacer David Morway, the Spurs Dennis Lindsey or the Suns David Griffin. Or ... I know a number of sports columnists who'd take the job.

I would take Lindsey for sure. He's been a right hand guy in probably the top organization in the last decade. Suns have had plenty of success, although I don't know how long Griffin has been there.

Sounds like pure speculation either way, no info.

I would take the Spurs guy, since they have been winning for awhile now. Why does everyone think the Pacers is a good place to start? They have not proven much as of late.

It just doesn't matter......a JR. exec will not have enough power....I still think the better jr. exec's would pass.

the big names that would have the status to get to make their own decisions (at least somewhat) won't come here, and the guys that have been assistants on good teams and have seen how to build a team won't have enough power to be anything but larry harris part 2

At this point, Dennis Lindsey is the guy I'd like to see here, but I don't know how much power he would have.

so are ignoring that Ford mention Bill Simmons......just a thought.

Maybe one would pass, but there are only 30 GM jobs in the NBA and it would come with a sizable bump in pay. I'd be surprised if multiple assistant GM's passed on the job if offered.

Somebody had to be the fall guy. It wasn't going to be Ron Walter.

Lindsey hasn't even been working for the Spurs for a full year. Not that the Rockets aren't a good franchise also, but don't think we'd be getting the co-architect of the Spurs' successes.

I want to bring in about three of these candidates and give them each different titles. Think they would come if we gave them each a raise?

I agree with El Dude, there are only 30 GM jobs in the NBA. If you're trying to move up the ladder you have two choices - take a job with a meddling owner or sit back and hope a better job comes along later. But what if the better job never comes along? You've missed your chance and maybe your only chance to be an NBA GM.

Now some of those guys may decide Kohl isn't worth it. But I don't think all of them will. Somebody will be willing to jump into this mess because the opportunity to be a GM on any team doesn't come along very often and if you can succeed with this joke of a team then your reputation really will escalate. So I'm not convinced that Kohl will strike out completely if he's really determined to bring in a fresh set of eyes (and ultimately that's the biggest question here).

People can counter by saying none of that will matter because Kohl and his cronies will still be around. I don't dispute that. However, my hope is that at least if someone with a strong pedigree is brought in perhaps that person won't fail with the "Plan B" moves and other moves that he's forced to make the way Harris so frequently did in recent years. That's pretty much my only hope at this point if a GM with a proven track record of success can't be hired (and I don't see that happening with Walsh no longer an option).

I'm with you two. Somebody's going to take it. I also think whoever it is is going to get some slack, at least in the first offseason, to reshape the team. Kohl will still have to sign off, but given the current the direction of the team I can see him being a little more malleable to suggestions from someone who wasn't involved in digging the ditch we currently lay in.

But almost all of the front office people with any kind of good reputation at all will pass, assuming the better career move is to just wait for another job to open up in the future. If they remain in their current positions, their reps will remain intact and they will remain at the top of the candidate list when another GM position opens up.

Obviously there is a certain amount of money you can throw at someone to make them willing to take that kind of gamble. I don't know how likely Kohl is to bring out a truckload of cash for someone who isn't a "name" GM when he isn't even keen anymore on doing that for someone who IS a "name"

The people who will be interested would be front office people who aren't really viewed as top candidates and likely would never get the chance if a preferable position opened up.

So we'd have to hope we come across another organization's Larry Harris. Larry Harris would never have been considered for some other team's GM position when we hired him. Only after he became a GM (within his first year and ahlf on the job) did he earn himself an extremely favorable reputation among other front office people. This has carried over and will give him the opportunity to land a GM position with another team in the near future. So for all the crap that he went through here, being GM here did make future GM opportunities possible whereas that would not have happened otherwise.

That's my hope. Whoever the new guy is, he's given slack early on the make moves and if those moves pan out well, Kohl trusts the guy enough to mostly stay out of his way.
