Larry Brown wants to coach again

Larry Brown hasn't officially coached a basketball game in nearly two years, but his head and heart remain in the game, and he said yesterday he hoped to land a head coaching job, either in the NBA or in college, for next season.
"I've got to figure out if I can get a coaching job," Brown said. "I want to get back so bad. I'm so bored."

In January 2007, the 76ers hired Brown as their executive vice president, and he has assisted head coach Maurice Cheeks in evaluating players. Brown also has been a mainstay at Villanova practices, offering Jay Wright support and suggestions on offensive sets.

Although he has had coaching offers since he was fired after one tumultuous season with the New York Knicks in 2005-06, Brown has not found the right opportunity. Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers offered him an assistant job last year, as did Marquette coach Tom Crean, now the head coach at Indiana. Brown also interviewed for the Princeton job.

Brown coached the Sixers for six seasons, leading them to the 2001 NBA Finals. He was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.

Brown said he did not have a preference between the college and pro games. He just wants to coach again.

"Mo [Cheeks] has been great to me and allowed me to get involved," the 67-year-old Brown said.

"I just miss it. I don't miss the games so much, but I miss being around the coaches and the players. I still have something to offer. . . . After my last experience [in New York], I just want to go where I can do a better job and move forward."

I would love it - let's face it, by the time he got boared and quit, we'd be saying hewas scenile anyways.

If not the Bucks, then maybe Marquette.

We have talked about Brown a lot in many threads. I have mixed feelings but he's a definite upgrade.

Brown's not my favourite coach but I think it'd be a step in the right direction to hire someone as experienced and high profile as him. I'm sick to death of these assistant coaches, it's bad enough having some key players being young and developing let alone having your coach in the same situation.

Would Larry Brown go back to college coaching? I'm kind of surprised IU didn't go after him. he would have been a perfect fit. With the type of players IU historically recruits, he would have become a great recruiter, motivator and coach.

at this stage in his life and looking at the bucks, I wonder if he would be better as a coach or as the GM with one of his disciples as coach? it's clear he failed at new york because the players didn't buy into his system and they gave up on him, and he subsequently gave up on them. the current bucks are also known as being non-listeners and coach killers. if larry did come to the Bucks, there would have to be a major overhaul of bucks players. it would be nice to see larry take apart the bucks and reconstruct it the way it should be constructed.

I think the success of Larry Brown as the coach of the Bucks would depend on the GM they have in place. It seemed pretty clear in NY that Isiah didn't back Larry over the players which basically led to Larrys demise. I see 2 options.

1). Get an old school GM who is not afraid to trade players with bad attitudes or who don't buy into team principals or

2). Get Larry take the responsibilities of both Coach and President of basketball operations. That way players will know where they stand. They can't go behind the back of the coach and whinge about shot etc to the pres cause Larry would be both. Anyone that didn't fit in to his plans for the teams could be moved for someone who would.

If we hired Brown as coach it would be with at least the understnading that he'd have a lot of say in basketball decisions---I bet he'd get some sort of title to go wtih it though. However, I bet we'd have a GM in addition though, as our GM's main purpose is team promotion (which Brown wouldn't do well anyways).

If we'd end up with Brown, Babcock or Sund, and the rest of Herb's cronies at hte decision table, what would people think? If Brown has the loudest say I wouldn't despise it like I would if we keep Herb in charge, that's for sure.

I like Brown as a coach he has had success just about anywhere he has gone. But with our young team I would want someone a tad younger than Brown who would be here for what maybe a year or two? Maybe if we were in the playoffs. We need to think long term not short term.

If Brown is returning to coaching, it won't be for the Bucks. He'll want to go somewhere with a chance to make a pretty good team great, not a crappy team mediocre. Brown is a good coach but I'm not sure he's the right fit for Milwaukee.

Why not Jeff Van Gundy? At the very least, his analysis of the Bucks when he did one of their games this year was pretty accurate. He seems like, if he wants to resume coaching, he'd be more willing to go through the rebuilding stage.

Probably the best option considering his love of talented big men. If anyone could get the best out of Yi and Bogut it would be Van Gundy.

I posted this in the final four thread, but did anyone else see the shots of Larry Brown at the Final four cheering on UNC against Kansas...pretty sad. I really hope we don't go after him.

I thought it was pretty pathetic for him to show up to that game at the arena and do that. Should have stayed home if he wanted to cheer for UNC after winning a title at Kansas.

What would you guys think about Van Gundy as a GM? He and Krystowiak are like-minded in how they value defense and post play, so I think they'd be on the same page as far as personnel as well.

I don't see why that's sad. Kansas was the best coaching job he could get at the time and he won a title there. That doesn't make him, nor should it, less of a UNC fan.

I don't know about GM, but he is my #1 choice for coach.

The trouble with Larry Brown and the Bucks is that he plays veterans and leaves inexperienced players on the bench. Milwaukee would have gone crazy if Brown was the coach this year and CV and Yi spent most of the year sitting while Gadz, Voskuhl and Ruffin played most of the minutes with Bogut at C and PF.

Also, a vote for Brown as coach is a vote for Sessions spending another year in the D-league.

so root at home and don't take the screen time away from the current players and coaches on the court. It is sad. Larry brown, you have nothing to do with this UNC team.
