'The Grid' Could Soon Make the Internet Obsolete

The Internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection,

This sounds cool. How much will it cost?

so its an alternative.....its like satellite and Cable, there is really no difference...it may be faster but how much faster can it be.

But I am intrigued by this "Grid".

Must be fast. They said in movie download in 5 second. Average size movie on limewire is like 700MB-800MB that take a average of 3 hours to get. Cause alot of new hard drives now days are 1TB.

If you read the article you would see that it is MUCH faster.

I'm not going to lose any sleep waiting for Verizon or Cablevision to roll this out to consumers. Lots of people are still using dialup.

do we actually believe it will be that fast...technology like that, this would has yet to see..(well maybe the government has).

this can be at the same level as when electricity was invented. (ok I took way to far with that statement but you know what I mean)

This article didn't sound like this technology was anyting domestic consumers will be able to use any time soon.

But who knows I guess.

Could watch Bucks games live maybe in the future on the pc. Not a day old game that was uploaded or a delayed game for fast cable.

And where can we buy a magical hard drive that will be able to write at 300-400 MB per second?

Until that day, none of this matters for the masses.

You can already do that. Granted, the picture isn't HD or anything, but it's certainly good enough to get by.

How fast can flash drives write data? I assume it wouldn't work with a moving parts sort of hard drive.

I'm not sure the data transfer rate is on flashdrives. I have a SanDisk 512MB mini cruzer. I use it for my ps2 Socom Navy seals combined assault for map packs. The map packs for socom 3 and combined assault are now free. 3 packs.

ultimately this probably won't have a massive impact on an average person, could have some cool live music possibilities

No, it is not an alternative and it is not like satellite or cable. Cable/Satellite are ways to gain access to the internet.

The Grid would be something different. People using the internet wouldn't be able to access pages or download files on the Grid. It is something different.

And what's this nonsense in the article about scientists creating the internet? I thought it was Al Gore!

Now it is alternative to internet, but I heard that in a couple of years internet servers won't work anymore because of the massive number of users; so I believe this new kind of communication will substitute the internet by a decade.

I thought I heard somewhere that their going to be using a liquid type substance to transfer memory and all that jazz! I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I think what I said is what I heard lmao!

if it's gonna make storing data on individual computers obsolete, would you just a massive amount of ram and then stream everything?
