Majerus on Homer

Things are a bit slow around here, just heard Rick Majerus on homer and he brought up a couple points of interest on topics we have discussed.

Homer said he wanted Larry Brown and thought it might work if you bring King in with him as the GM, Majerus shot that down extremely quickly, basically said Brown being there a year or 2 does nothing for Bogut or Yi.

The other thing Majerus said I found interesting was that he would go after Conley or Lowry from Memphis, no matter what it took.....believes the Bucks will be nothing until they get a good PG. This was assuming they don't win the lottery and get Derrik Rose, who Majerus thought was MUCH better than Deron Williams.

I bring this up because Majerus is a central figure in Kohl's circle.

I agree with this line of thinking with regard to Conley. I'd offer up Villanueva/lottery pick or Yi/lottery pick to get Conley. He would have a major impact on this team in my opinion. A Conley-Sessions PG situation has the potential to be a very strong one going forward.

I don't think the Bucks should have to break the bank to get Lowry. Villanueva for Lowry/filler should work. I've been proposing that deal for a long time now.

Bottom line - I agree with Majerus. The Bucks are going nowhere until they get a quality PG. And if Majerus does have Kohl's ear on this, it could be a prelude to Mo being dealt but Redd staying put.

You're right Kohl does listen to Majerus. I don't want a King/Brown combo. And I agree about a point guard. Rose is unfortunately a long shot and Mo is definitely not the answer. And Sessions.... well it's too early to tell but I certainly wouldn't bet on him being great.

Conley I'd buy, but what has anyone seen out of Lowry that makes you believe he could be a competent NBA point guard.

I've seen a player who can run the offense effectively, works hard defensively and has vastly improved his shooting as this season has gone along. I don't view him as a potentially great PG but rather a quality starter you can win with.

I'm not a big fan either of Lowry. I see him as a guy that if he's your starting PG, you'll always be hoping you can find someone better.

Did he say whether he was surprised that Bogut could still see?

If I got to trade one guy on the team, I'd probably choose Mo.

With that said, I'd take Mo over Lowry.

And I have watched plenty of Memphis games this year.

I disagree. I think a two year Larry Brown rental would be a good thing for our young team. He can teach them discipline and how to play the right way (i.e. defend and share the ball). Then, after he wears out his welcome, the core can move forward with a new coach, while maintaining the chemistry they developed. I attribute much of the Pistons continued success to what LB taught them when he was there...

I agree with this.....and I'd rather Herb just hire Larry Brown and make him coach with GM type powers than have us hire Babcock or Sund or some other Ron Walter puppet.

We might not agree with all Larry Brown does, but he'd make changes....and he's smarter than everyone in that front office right now.

You get dysfunction with either alternative but Brown at least knows what he's doing......

Please don't say such ahistorical things. Please.

The Pistons seemed to have learned this "right way" when Carlysle coached them before Brown, as they then had a 50-32 record (4th in defense). Were the extra 4 wins under Brown the next year related to Brown? Damned if I know (or you), but don't pretend he turned around some struggling team.

NYKs lost 10 more games under Brown. His fault? Doubtful, but if you wish to credit him with Pistons' 4 more wins... How about how his right way got the 76ers to all of 31 wins in his first year, from 22 the previous--a nine win gain, which we have learned on this forum is a big so what.

Did Brown's right way do much for the Pacers after Brown's first year. 6 more wins, but did inherit a 41 win team. All in all 9 more wins for teams in Brown's first year (I'm only doing his last 4 franchises), or an average of 2.5 wins. Bucks 30 wins this year. If things go to his best, then 39 wins, if to the average 32.5 wins. Of course, I have a hunch that most coaches will show the same, so, given the high cost for Brown, exactly why?

I'm not sold on hiring Brown but to answer your question I think one potential reason (and it's potentially a very strong one) is respect. Krystkowiak lost the respect of this team months ago. Bringing in someone with Brown's track record would hopefully lead the players to give the head coach more respect. That's a big reason why Karl was successful - the players respected him because he had a proven track record of success. Same with Brown. Now, like Karl, the ride could be a short one with Brown. His history strongly suggests that would be the case but at least for a couple of seasons you'd have to believe he'd command the respect of this team. And that, in my opinion, is something the next head coach absolutely has to have.

Again, I'm not sold on hiring Brown but he would come with considerably more credibility and respect than a first-timer would.

Epi....if you look at Browns entire body of work, it is excellent.....he's turned around many college and pro programs and is the only coach to have done so in both mediums so to speak....

And he's taken good teams like Detroit that next step to the title.....

He's clearly one of those guys who can bring extra wins to a team.....I'd chalk his Knicks situation to the fact he's a lot older and not a miracle worker.

I was not, nor represented that I was, considering Brown's whole work. And since he coached up the road, I am somewhat familiar with it. I was responding to someone who said so what if he leaves in two years, he will have taught his players the right way, as he did in Detroit. I stand by my remarks.

Majerus also said that with an 8 or 9 pick Love would be a good choice and that Mo should be the backup 1 and 2 if the Bucks get Conley or Lowry.

Yes, doubtlessly greater player respect from an established winning record. Yet, when you look over the last 4 franchises, that respect didn't translate in the first year to anything awesome.

True, the Pistons weren't a scrub team prior to LB joining them. Four wins doesn't sound like much, but turning a decent team that lost 4-1 in the semis to a team that won an NBA championship (4-1 against the highly favored Lakers) is a significant accomplishment. And after he guided the 76ers to all of 31 wins in his first year, he took them to the finals. So yes, he is (or at least has been) capable of turning a franchise around...

Edited to add: You are correct, Epi, that the Pistons example is not the best one in Brown's career to use as evidence of his ability to teach teams to play the right way. The Phili example is much better...
