Scouts Inc.- "Yi Should Imitate Camby"

Post#1 » by Mags FTW » Thu Apr 10, 2008 4:28 am

Interesting blurb in the JS that slipped under the radar a few days ago.
All aboard

David Thorpe of Scouts Inc., who has been writing weekly about the rookies in the NBA this season, ranks Yi Jianlian No. 19 on his list of the best rookies to date.

Thorpe wrote that the player in the league he wants Yi to study in order to imitate is Marcus Camby of the Denver Nuggets.

In Thorpe's view, Yi needs to see himself more as a rebounder than scorer in the manner that Camby does.

"Yi has long arms, great hands and a superior feel for rebounding, just like Camby," Thorpe wrote. "All he needs is the attitude."

Yi will have to wait until next season to take that advice. He is out for the rest of this season with a knee injury.
One more time?

Yi has great potential....I know you guys think he is a bust after his rookie season but if you look at the little things he does shows he is a different type of player he just doesn't shoot jumpers he takes it inside, he is active on defense, he rebounds. He just needs to get stronger and he will be very good.

I know its not like you guys to give a rookie a second shot but let him develop.

Great hands?

Proof positive that this guy did not watch Yi play a single minute this year. Though I do agree that he would be best suited being the help defender/rebounder guy.
Please reconsider your animal consumption.

If Yi has great hands then I have a great body. Neither are close to being true.

Well, the whole hands thing aside I think it's a nice comparison. Yi is probably less athletic/explosive than Camby, but has a better jumper.

 Good old MJS, picking up on a story published on ESPN on March 25th (and then Nowak posted about it on that day)

I guess 2 weeks late is better than never for MJS though.

The biggest problem for Yi is to adapt to a total different culture, both on and off the court. The CBA physical intensity is just pathetic compared to NBA basketball, and the impact with a living style totally different from the one in which he has lived for his first 19/22/23/78 years, is just rough. He has to adapt to it, and he needs time. You can't blame him because he had a 8.6 pts/5.2 rebs rookie season in a whole different league at 19/22/etc.

I believe he can imitate Camby, but he should work on his physical toughness to emulate him. His physical skills are very good, so I believe he can.

Yi has great hands like Mo is a lockdown defender (NBA 2k8 awarded Mo that status).

I have not been a big Yi fan since all of the hold out crap. But he could have been a lot worse this year. I mean we had a mid lottery pick how many mid lottery picks turn out great. I think he can have a solid career as a starter in a few years and a good role player. He may become even better but I don't think so I think he is what he is and once he feels more comfortable in Milwaukee and with our team and new coaching staff I hope things can turn around for him if not another wasted pick like Todd Day.

This article was the worst thing I have read on ESPN in years (and that is akin to being the drunkest undergrad at UW). Best of all, comparing a (sometimes) sweet shooting power forward to an oft injured rebounding and shot blocking specialist (Camby) was not even the worst comparison the article made. They said Jaokim Noah should study tapes of DIRK NOWITSKI! Jaokim Noah is like Gadzuric with a pony tail and on steroids. His shooting mechanics guarentee he will never be a go to permiter scorer... yet that article linked Noah to the best perimiter big man in history (out of 4's and 5's, obviously not including small forwards).

Yi = Camby? I hope that was just the writers way of saying that Yi needs to become a better rebounder and shot blocker. But that is a dumb way of saying it. What Yi really needs to do, is get the Olympics behind him, rest up, and then add about 20 ilbs of upper body strength. Tyson Chandler was a guy with a slender build who did nothing in the league until his body developed, and I got to say that Yi's tendency to get stuffed at the rim and lose rebounds that should have been his are related to his noodle arms. But... and this is a big if... if Yi can add tha tmuscle without losing his touch (and improve his hands and ball handling a little) he has all star potential.

I think people are way to hard on Yi, and they need to realize it was his rookie season. With that said I don't believe he will be a Camby. I still think he will be good, and that will all come when he puts on some weight. He had some flashes early one, and no doubt he can have those again with some muscle and some rest.
