SportsNation Chad Ford: (1:10 PM ET ) I think they're first choice would be Pistons assistant GM John Hammond -- one of the best people in the NBA and a guy who's been tutored by Joe Dumars -- perhaps the most brilliant GM in the league. The question is, would Hammond want to leave a stellar franchise like the Pistons for the Bucks? It's a tougher question than you think ...

he will only be moving across the lake and if things work out he can have his own legacy.

i thought the pistons didn't give us permission to talk to him

Hammond seems to be head and shoulder ahead of any GM candidate we've been talking about since Donnie Walsh chose New York.

He'd be a particularly good fit ocnsidering he helped to construct a team in Detroit with no obvious superstar, which is a model the Bucks would be smart to follow instead of continuing to pretend that Michael Redd is a Kobe Bryant or continuing to tank everywhere while we bleed fans waiting for lottery luck----that plan could last until our team moves for lack of fans.

Why does he need permission?

It isn't a lateral move, it should be Hammond's choice not Dumars.

Yeah, that was my question. I posted his response in the "Vote for the GM choice you want" thread because I thought it fit in there and wasn't sure if his response warranted another thread...

I'd love hammond to come here...

If he was a buddy of Carlisle's in Detroit, i'd really like a hammond/carlisle combo.

That would be the dream scenario IMO. I wouldn't mind Hammond/Brown either...

That would definitely be another combo I'd be in favor of as well.

The single biggest reason why i hope the bucks are leaning towards hammond... is that if we are serious about building a winning team (something that despite all his faults kohl is trying to do) then it is almost certainly going to have to be with the blueprint that the Pistons used.

And why, pray tell Chad Ford... wouldn't Hammond want to come to the bucks? Milwaukee is a nicer city than Detroit (by far). The money would be top notch. And there are not an endless supply of NBA GM openings. Certainly no time soon in Detroit. And its not like jobs in "destination" cities like LA or Miami come up often. So a guy like Hammond almost has no choice but to start out in a place like Milwaukee.

THe only things that would be a serious obstacle to a first timer desiring this job would be 1) a lack of assurances that Kohl will actually let him run things 2) budget restrictions that none of us are privy to 3) fear that an apathetic or dwindling fan base will undermine his efforts to build up the franchise

But come on... there are only x amount of GM openings, and with the way the NBA's "old boy" network works... he could go another 2-3 years without getting another legit opportunity.

Suffice to say, if Hammond does not want, and lobby hard for this job.... it tells us that working for Kohl is even worse than we suspect.

I agree completely 2000% as the detroit model is probably the best way for this organization to go. and as for the permission thing it was that Dumars didnt want to give permission unless Hammond was the top candidate, I think Dumars is doing this as to not allow the market to be easily set to allow another team to steal away what is a valued member of his staff, however since it would be a promotion Dumars realistically can't and won't stop Hammonds from interviewing for the position.

See and now i am salivating cuz that would be the best move by far. Please oh please Herb go against ur gut instinct and make this happen.

Have no inside info on this but Hammond would make sense.....The Bucks wanted desperately to have someone in place by the end of the season...and there is only 1 of 2 possible reasons they haven't yet:

1) They are waiting for Detroit to give them permission to speak to Hammond.

2) Everyone they really wanted has turned them down.

Both are very strong possibilites.

Reading between the lines it appears that Ford has no insider information on this matter and is simply making a projection based on what he thinks a logical owner would do. The problem is he wouldn't be factoring in we don't exactly have an owner who has a track record of making decisions based on logic.
