Thought I'd do a little research and see what kind of team we could expect if Carlisle was coach. Now, obviously roster dictates a lot of this, but it's interesting to look at his overall sample and see what kind of teams he molded. I looked at Offensive Rating (points scored per 100 possessions), Defensive Rating (points allowed per 100 possessions), and Pace (number of possessions per 48 minutes). Here are the NBA ranks for his teams:

01-02 Pistons (50-32): 12th OR, 8th DR, 19th P
02-03 Pistons (50-32): 15th OR, 4th DR, 29th P
03-04 Pacers (61-21): 9th OR, 3rd DR, 26th P
04-05 Pacers (44-38): 18th OR, 11th DR, 29th P
05-06 Pacers (41-41): 21st OR, 3rd DR, 20th P
06-07 Pacers (35-47): 30th OR, 9th DR, 10th P

Average season (47-35): 17.5 OR, 6.3 DR, 22.1 P

Basically, we could forget any chance of us being an up tempo team with Carlisle, but we could expect to really limit teams ability to score at a high FG%. Interesting numbers.

The team better win. Winning is always fun, but losing at a slow grind it out pace is the worst.

The thing about a slow, grind it out pace is that it hinges on the D doing their job. If the D fails, the other team scores quickly. If it is Carlisle, then the roster really is in for a make-over unless some guys miraculously learn to play D really quick.

those numbers are really spread out, and it does show that when his teams aren't very good, he tends to up the tempo

These are very interesting numbers to think about, thanks. I agree with Adam, I'd like to have a team that can win; obviously to become a typical Carlisle team we need to make some moves.

Carlisle surely doesn't like up-tempo basketball, but I believe a good coach has to adapt to the situation he has. Look at Indy, that has been not good this year, but battled for a playoff spot (ok, at 35-45, but they battled for it) despite all their injuries (Tinsley, JO, ...) and their problems off the court (Idon't believe there is a single player - maybe Jeff Foster - that has not problems with the justice). Jim O'Brien isn't exactly an up-tempo lover, but he had to play it, he played it, and they played well on offense; their defense allowed a lot but in points allowed for 100 possessions isn't that bad.

So I believe Carlisle is a good move for us, and I'm sure that he is going to adapt to the roster he would going to have next year.
