OT: New Music

Post#1 » by LISTEN2JAZZ » Tue Apr 15, 2008 7:25 pm

After tomorrow, we're all going to need something new to do with our time. It's time for a discussion of new music that's come out recently or will soon be released. No restrictions on genre - just mention some stuff that you enjoy.

Brian Blade Fellowship - Season of Changes (5/6/08)
http://www.vervemusicgroup.com/artist/r ... 3&aid=3106
Brian Blade is one of the only guys around who can play the drums beautifully. He has insane technique that he'll never slap you upside the head with. Just a full-time servant to the music, and to playing the right thing (which often means not playing at all). Completely selfless, and so patient. I think it's been eight years since the last album; about time!

Miguel Zenon - Awake (4/1/08)
http://www.marsalismusic.com/
Miguel has found new (or more accurately, seldom explored) ways to approach all aspects of music - harmony, form, rhythm. The net cumulative result is a completely personal sound. This is his third album on Marsalis Music, and each one just travels deeper down the same path as the previous one. Props to Branford for allowing his artists to spend years exploring the same ideas; most any other label would have asked for a themed album, or the addition of guest artists that haven't been in the trenches working with him on his concepts, etc. You can listen to complete tracks at the above link.

What else is out there?

As far as new releases go, I've been digging the following:

Vampire Weekend - S/T
Solid hipster-pop, buzz band from SXSW. Some elements of African music, upbeat and a fun listen
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/48053-vampire-weekend

Black Mountain - In The Future
Thick, psychedelic-sounding rock. This record grew on me over time, looking forward to annoying my neighbors with it at the next cookout:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/48026-in-the-future

Tapes 'n Tapes - Walk It Off
Upbeat pop from MN. Has a little Clap your Hands And Say Yeah thing going on. Good summer music:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/49805-walk-it-off

New stuff I haven't listened to enough but am excited about:

Portishead - Third
First album from these guys in forever. Kinda slow rock with hip-hop sounding beats and a sexy female singer. Think Massive Attack. (apparently this isn't out yet, but I scored a copy)

Stephen Malkmus - Real Emotional Trash
Goofy frat-boy rock from Pavement patriarch - good summer music:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/49042-real-emotional-trash

Raconteurs - Consolers of the Lonely
Jack While (white stripes) other band, sort of a college rock super group I guess
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/49603-consolers-of-the-lonely

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular
Hot Stuff - think Flaming Lips, Muse type rock, but a little more funky
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/46197-oracular-spectacular

Been around for a couple months but still love it:

Radiohead - In Rainbows
Best. Band. Ever.

Local (Milwaukee) bands

The Vega Star

The Championship

DocGonzo, could you talk a little about the artists you post? I've never heard of most those guys, and am unlikely to do research on each one of them. How about a link to some audio previews and a word or two about what makes them worthwhile?

I love how genre hopping these threads get. With that in mind, here I go:

Cut Copy / "In Ghost Colours"
First album I've been enthusiastic about this year...been listening to this for about a month straight Their music is somewhere between New Order and French electro-pop. I loved their debut album from four years ago, and saw them last month in NYC--awesome live show. I think this one's better though.
http://www.myspace.com/cutcopy

M83 / "Saturdays = Youth"
I loved M83's 2003 album "Dead Cities, Red Seas and Lost Ghosts" but thought the follow-up was really disappointing. This one is nominally electronic, shoegazer stuff with more of an '80s pop influence than previous stuff. Been listening for a couple weeks and I like it a lot.
http://www.myspace.com/m83

The Cribs / "Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever"
This was produced by Franz Ferdinand lead singer Alex Kapranos and sounds like it. Britrock with plenty of raw punk energy, but surprisingly heavy on pop riffs and melodies. It came out a year ago but I keep on listening and listening.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=oCNTYi9fHuo
http://www.myspace.com/thecribs

And yeah, I'm still listening to Radiohead's "In Rainbows." So good, can't wait to see them again in August.

It seems like there's a lot of original music coming out of the twin cities. One of the places I'd love to move to.

For any Rock/Experimental fans check out Thrice's CD The Alchemy Index Volumes 3 and 4. It's the second half of a concept album based on the 4 elements: Fire Water Earth Air, this one is Earth and Air.

If you ask me the best band out there right now!!

Thrice just released volumes III & IV of their acclaimed Alchemy Index.

If you aren't familiar with Thrice or the Alchemy Index, the concept behind it is 24 songs based upon the four elements. Six for water, six for fire, six for earth, six for air.

Last fall they released the first two.

Volume I (fire) was heavy, loud and sounded like something straight out of hell.
The Arsonist is probably my favorite tune from this volume.

Volume II (water) was more expirimental, fluid and had some electronic elements not seen from Thrice before.
I loved The Whaler.

ANYWAY - NEW MUSIC :)

Obviously Earth and Wind are the remaining volumes. I haven't had a lot of time to digest them yet, but I can already say that they're much better than the last two.

Volume III (air)...well it sounds like you would expect. Whispy, calm, etc. Lots of orchestral arrangements. This song is a must-listen. It's called Daedalus.

Volume IV (earth) has got a lot of accoustic elements. Not much production behind any of the tunes. They almost sound like a they were lifted from a coffee house set.

Come all you weary is a pretty great tune. If you want a treat I suggest checking out their song "Digging my own grave".

If you want to listen to all of Volumes III and IV, you can do so by heading to theirmyspace page.

Great minds think alike, but damn!

And I totally agree. They're easily my favorite band.

I also loved Dead Cities, but haven't checked out the subsequent albums. I'll keep my eyes open for their new one, sounds interesting based on your description.

The Cribs sound interesting - Franz Ferdinand is a guilty pleasure of mine.

Which Radiohead show are you going to? I'm stuck with Lollapalooza if I wanna see 'em, but as much as I love the band I'm not sure I can brave those kind of elements.

I got to see them on the OK Computer tour, in Chicago at a 2000 person theater, with Spiritualized opening for them. That was my moment of musical Nirvana thus far in my lifetime...

I saw Ax7 a twice years ago and both times they rocked my nuts off. This is their best song and maybe my favorite tune to see played live.

Bullet for my Valentine is alright, though I hadn't heard their latest yet. I really liked The End quite a bit.

Great OT thread adam! I listened to a bit of your friend and I really liked what I heard. My musical taste is a bit odd (but I guess one would expect that Huh! ) I spend the vast majority of my time listening to classical; I'm hopelessly stuck in the Baroque. I also love choir's. My daughter sings in the concert choir and chamber choir at her college and the professor chooses wonderful pieces from around the world that I love to listen to. I also love hymns. I have a collection of hymns sung by Stuart Neill with Paul S Jones on piano (10th Presbyterian Church in Philly) that brings tears everytime I listen to it.

I also love folk/bluegrass music. I have around 32 Dylan vinyl albums (maybe a dozen bootlegs), John Hartford is also a favorite.

Rock/Pop type stuff is far down on my list but my favorite is Ry Cooder "Bop till you drop" is my fav of his. I also enjoy. Savoy Brown I also liked "Street Corner Talkin'" I believe was the name of my fav of theirs.

I do like a smattering of jazz, but I'm not knowledgeable about it. I do tend to listen to Dave Brubeck to scratch that itch.

My nephew works in TV in LA and for a change of pace he plays in a classic rock type band. They have been getting some recognition it seems as he told me that last month they played at the Derby (aka: The Brown Derby) and this month they are playing at The Whiskey A go go. He just got engaged and I was thinking of having a guitar made for him, by a guy I know or at least knew "back in the space cowboy days."

Great thread adam!
