Jeff Weltman begins his fourth season with the Nuggets after being named assistant general manager on Sept. 27, 2001.
During his tenure, Denver has engineered numerous trades and has made quality draft choices which have shifted the Nuggets from a struggling team with no salary cap flexibility, to one of the up-and-coming teams in the NBA. In 2003-04, the Nuggets posted the sixth-biggest turnaround in NBA history, improving their win total by 26 games and reaching the playoffs for the first time since 1995.

Weltman came to the Nuggets following 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he had served as director of player personnel since 1994. In this role, Weltman oversaw the Clippers scouting department and contributed with many other aspects of the club

he was hired away from Denver and wil be Hammond's right hand guy for now...

Puts a possible damper on Babcock's scenario.

though this shows more than that, John has brought in guys he feels good with and on top of that guys Kohl is paying top dollar for.

If these guys prove to know what they are doing, whatever money Kohl is paying them will be pocket change compared to the damage bad GM's can do in handing out toxic mega-million dollar contracts.

Hammond's plan is to reallyexpand the front office with basketball people, a plan which I've advocated since pointing out that Kohl no longer employed any scouts.

Yeah I brought up the topic Sunday night because of what I had noticed when Hammond was asked specifically about at the press conference, and you confirmed it from what you heard on your end at the game on Monday.

Hammond is keeping Babcock though, no matter who else he hires. He sees him as a big asset to the organization.

Someone (Jef Weltman going by what Chuck Diesel and wichmae say) is going to be brought in and given the title of Assistant GM.

Hammond will be the #1, Weltman the #2, and Babcock the #3 keeping his DPP title.

There is also a pretty good chance that we bring in a #4 guy right below Babcock with the title of Assistant DPP.

And then actually stock up again on full-time scouts, at which point we will actually resemble a real functional front office again.

Also, I'm hoping that Hammond and/or Weltman possess expertise when it comes to the CBA. Larry Harris did, but Babcock does not.
We've been without a real salary cap specialist though since Dan Kohl left.

Don't you happen to be versed in such matters?

The fact Hammond is hiring his own people is huge. He definitely appears to have been given the control he needs.
