Chad Ford Talks Hammond, New Coach, Draft

Post#1 » by europa » Thu Apr 17, 2008 6:24 pm

From his chat today:

Jeff (Rio de Janeiro): Chad, Please answer a Bucks question. What does hiring John Hammond mean for the Bucks future? Is there enough talent on this roster to turn the team around? What do you think will happen in the draft and on the coaching front? Thank you!

SportsNation Chad Ford: First, I have to confess ... I love John Hammond. One of the best guys you'll ever meet. He's been mentored by Joe D ... so I expect a lot of good things. I think Larry Brown is the coach if he would come. If not, Rick Carlisle or Scott Skiles is probably the guy. It will be someone with a strong track record. As for the draft? Hammond is going to shake up the roster. He seems to like Bogut and Yi. Everything else could be up in the air. So, I don't think you draft for position ... you take the best player. At No. 7? Maybe Eric Gordon or Russell Westbrook.

Ford's probably broken more Bucks stories in the past few years than all of the Wisconsin media outlets combined. He may not be as tapped into the Bucks as he was when Harris was feeding him info - though he was all over Hammond the day before that happened - but I think he's one of the best NBA beat writers around.

Eh....I signed up for it about 5-years ago....I've gotten the investment back....you get all the Hollinger stuff and stats whenever you want it, which I enjoy....and Ford. Then on football you get a ton of good draft stuff as well.

All I am saying, is that in the age of message boards and player blogs, anyone who pays ESPN $5 a month is dumb, because it would take you about two minutes to find the info posted somewhere else (like here) for free. Is that stealing? Hard to say. Kind of a gray area.

As for breaking the Hammond story, that was on regular ESPN.com. Fortunately they don't make us pay for actual news. But they probably would if they could.

In his chat the day before Hammond was hired, Ford wrote that Hammond was the Bucks' top choice. At that point, everybody thought the Bucks had been denied permission to talk to him. It's clear Ford knew something about the process and he turned out to be on the mark.

He has his flaws - notably he extends a lot of devotion to his foreign rookies - but I think the guy is a pretty darn good NBA beat writer.

I paid for Insider for one month, canceled, but three years later I still have access to all the stuff. I also got The Magazine for a year.

So I think I've gotten a return on my investment.

I think I pay like $30/year and get the magazine with it. I just like being able to click on any story and having access.

The most important Bucks stuff always finds its way over here, but I have no problem paying a few bucks for convenience.

Whether its worth it or not is really relative to how much money you make and are willing to spend on it. While I don't buy music on itunes or any of those sites, it doesn't really both me that others do when they could probably get it elsewhere.

Also, good to see Ford writing about this at least, regardless of whether we already have the info, because its getting out to others (non-bucks fans)

If you go to espn.com during the chat, you can write in questions and see his responses in real time for free. Its only after the chat is over that it becomes espn insider material and you have to pay to see it...

Its debatable how connected Ford really has become (I don't think he had many connections when he started). But if you can be certain of one thing is that Detroit is his most reliable source. He doen't even hide it the way he sucks up to Detroit about anything and everything. It was Detroit letting Ford tag along with one of their scouts to chronicles the amazing Darko Milicic that he got his gig at ESPN in the first place.

I think you guys just call it a beet or silverbeet (?). Its purple and grows under the ground, you buy it sliced in a can.

The traditional aussie burger with-the-lot has beef pattie, bacon, onion, pineapple, beetroot, cheese, tomato, lettuce, egg with either tomato or BBQ suace.
