Similar to the Suns situation, since this has been Johnson's only head coaching gig it's impossible to know whether a different coach would have yielded different playoff results the last two years.

The Kidd trade was a bad one. Cuban does need to hire a real GM and get out of the way.

Still believe the Mavs would have won a championship in either 05 or the year they made the finals in 06 if they would have just kept Nash and Jamison..

Their window was still wide open and they were close... Cuban wanted to play GM, and made an error in judgement...

Common thread w/Suns is a bad trade, with even worse timing.....

Maybe Cuban attended the Herb Kohl school of NBA ownership?

Two consecutive first round exits, last year with the best record in the league.

How much should be blamed on coaching? How much on the players themselves? How much on the front office (especially this season with the Kidd trade)?

It's ironic that a few years ago we traded for a 35 year old point guard and lost in the first round to Jason Kidd and the Nets. And then Karl was let go.

I've never minded that Kohl isn't a cheerleader type owner that has to sit behind the bench and get as much camera time as he can. But I sure wish he would show at least a little emotion during games. He never smiles, he never frowns, he never claps, he only stands up if all the rows in front of him stand up. In the hundreds of games I've seen him at he's shown emotion one time. And it wasn't even the game 7 win over Charlotte.

The only thing we know with any certainty is the trade and the timing of it this year hurt them. The rest (coaches & players) is only speculation. Honestly, I haven't seen them play much and not very knowledgeable about them, but again it appeared that they really struggled after the trade, as did the suns.

Avery Johnson & D'antoni are two of the better coaches in the league.

Honestly, the guy has always creeped me out a bit. My dad & uncle went to HS with him and Selig. Kinda strange thinking of them as HSlers isn't it? I think Herbie is still wearing the same suit he wore to prom......

i'm a little concerned, if he doesn't have a job are they still gonna have david robinson on mike & mike in the morning doing impressions of him?

Was it Johnson that pushed for the Kidd trade debacle or was it mostly Cuban that went big name chasing?

I've heard both sides on the Kidd trade. The story I heard the most was that Johnson didn't think he could win with Devin. But I'm sure there will be a lot of finger pointing in all directions.

That's what I recall as well. Avery didn't have faith in Devin. But, don't quote me on that.

This seems like another classic case of a very very good coach just running out of ideas with a core group of players. Interesting how many big-name coaches are shuffling around this summer.

Mitch Kupchak should run away with executive of the year honors...not only did he make the single best deal of the season with the Pau trade, but he then also scared the Suns and Mavs into big trades that ended up making them worse both this year and down the road. Well played, Kupchak, well played indeed.

Agree on Kupchak. Making a good move yourself and causing 2 other teams to make bad panic moves = SMART.

I believe Kohl and Selig were actually roommates at UW.
