TI: Michael Redd for Thad Young

Post#1 » by paulpressey25 » Fri May 2, 2008 1:07 pm

This one was hatched by a couple guys on the playoffs thread last night. It is my favorite Redd trade to date.

Philly is sitting on a ton of cap room this offseason. You can make an argument that given Andre Miller's age they need to make a run now.

They could absorb Redd's $15.7 million salary after July 1st and still re-sign Iggy. Have Iggy play SF. Redd play SG.

I'm not sure what Philly's plans are with that cap room. If Marion and Brand don't opt out would they do this deal?

Would you as a Buck fan do this deal?

I like this better than Josh Howard because Thad Young is much younger and we get a ton of salary flexibility. If Philly doesn't want Redd, you could have them get Josh Howard in a three-way with Dallas.

This would obviously be a no-brainer for us, but I can't see the Sixers giving up Young right now, even if he's not likely to be a 20+ ppg guy anytime soon.

They can have Villanueva too.

I have seen Thaddeus Young play numerous times. Not opposed to trading Redd, but not for him. The kid has no jump shot and can't guess when or if he will ever develop one. He does play defense but excels on a team that runs, runs, runs at every opportunity. Would not look like the same baller on the Bucks. Young can be taken to school by a taller stronger player in the half court. If that is our only option, I'm staying with our pure shooter, Michael Redd!

Here's a revised deal that to me is more than fair to Philly and Dallas if for some reason Philly was hesitant.

Milwaukee sends:
Redd, CV

Milwaukee gets:
Thad Young
Brandon Bass
Eddie Jones (for contract purposes)

Philly sends
Thad Young

Philly receives
Josh Howard
CV

Dallas sends:
Josh Howard
Brandon Bass
Eddie Jones (for contract purposes)

Dallas receives:
Michael Redd

Isn't that pretty much a home run for us? And a good deal for Dallas? And while Thad Young has great potential, doesn't adding Josh Howard and CV instantly make them much tougher the next two years while Andre Miller still has something left in the tank?

It's an interesting idea. Usually a playoff team with cap space will want to use that space and there may be no free agencies in that price range. There are few teams with the cap space that we can trade with and not get back equal salary.

ETA: I think Hammond would do the proposed 3 team deal above. I don't know if Kohl would trade Redd without getting a "name" in return. Of course Kohl is no longer meddling so we don't have to worry about him.

Presuming that Mo Williams is gone (and I cannot imagine him playing for Skiles), I much prefer Josh Howard to Thaddeus Young for offensive reasons. Under the deal that PP proposes, assuming Mo's departure, I don't see who is going to score points for us.

If it is available, I prefer Howard, Bass & Jones to Young, Bass & Jones.

And, BTW, I would really love to get Brandon Bass.

Howard is also the target I would go for. Right now if we lose Redd AND Mo, that is 40 ppg gone, and while some will argue it's easy to replace scoring, I will definitely disagree with that.

If Sessions is our starting PG next year, which is a very high possibility at this point IMO, we are going to need a legt 20 ppg threat at SG or SF. I think Bogut makes the leap to about 17 ppg next year, but we can't really survive offensively with him as our top scorer.

I don't think scoring will be a problem if we see some improvement from our young guys, specifically Yi.

With Sampson on board, I think the chances of taking Gordon just went up as well, and I've long said I think he's going to be 20 ppg scorer in the near future.

I could see that, personally I'd rather have Westbrook because of his defense and ability to play some PG (while I see Gordon as a SG only), but I wouldn't be pissed with Gordon. I'd still look to add Howard for Redd though.

Sessions/Bell
Gordon/Mason
Howard/Simmons
Yi
Bogut

Mo and CV for frontcourt help.

I would definitely be in favor of either a Thad Young or Josh Howard trade.

I'd actually prefer the Thad Young trade because of the salary flexibility it would provide, along with the fact that Thad Young is a guy that can grow with Yi and potential develop into a Tayshaun Prince type.

With DB metioning the Gordon/Sampson connection I would not be opposed to that either with our 7th pick.

Then I'd send off Mo for Haslem and call it an offseason. I wouldn't necessarily predict playoffs next season but I think the team could grow into a formidable team in the East for years to come.

Sessions/Bell/Duhon?
Gordon/Mason
Young/Simmons
Yi/Haslem
Bogut/Haslem

That's a good point. I'm not sure what Philly's mindset will be, but I would have guessed they'd be wary of dealing Young at this stage (logically or not). It's certainly possible they get greedy and try to go big-time.

I can't fathom why Philadelphia would want to do this. They love Thaddeus Young

Actually, that team is pretty solid. Personally, I'd trade Redd for Howard/Jones/Mbenga (cap fillers) and draft Westbrook and Dorsey. Mo for Haslem I could live with in that scenario even though I think we lose talent-wise in the deal. CV for Lowry.

Sessions/Bell/Lowry
Westbrook/Mason
Howard/Simmons
Yi/Haslem
Bogut/Dorsey

I think that team has enough scoring on the bench to make up for the lack of scoring in the starting backcourt. One weakness with this team is consistent outside shooting, so maybe you turn around and send Mason's expiring for a shooter.

No reason to trade a budding star for Michael Redd, either.

True, but at the same time, Gordon is a very solid defender as well, and would instantly be an upgrade over Redd. I love Gordon, and I love Westbrook, but I see Gordon just a bit better than Westbrook because of his ability to drive, and his NBA 3-point range.

He is absolutely not a solid defender, at least not yet. His game is volume scoring right now. I'm not saying he's not talented, he definitely is, but his defense, ball-handling, playmaking, and shot selection all need a lot of work.

I was scoping out the Philly board and one of their fans suggested:

Carney and the 16th pick

For

Charlie Villanueva plus a 2nd rounder.

I think that trade is a slam dunk for the bucks. Carney is a guy that can step in at SF that has lots of upside and the bucks also get a nice mid round pick (16).

Providing you can't find a good trade for Redd, you could draft westbrook at 7, see whats available at 16, and then ship Mo for Haslem.

Sessions/Westbrook
Redd/Bell
Carney/Simmons
Yi/Haslem
Bogut/Haslem

I think the sixers definitely present a possible trade partner for CV if not Redd.

Carney is not very good at all, just an athlete, and definitely not a starting small forward. It would basically be CV and a 2nd for Carney and say CDR or Rush, which I would be OK but not elated with.

I'm not sure..
From what I've seen of him and what I've heard from their fans (he's a guy that needs alot more playing time and could be star according to many in philly). I think Carney could definitely become a starter, maybe not next year, but he'd at least be a very nice backup to Simmons at worst for next season.
