OT: Blackhawks series vs. Coyotes

Post#1 » by Honey Bear » Sun Apr 22, 2012 5:30 am

Surprised noone here has made a thread for this. I know the NHL forum is pretty much dead but there has to be at least a few fans that love the Hawks. Just won tonight to stay alive. Game 6 on Monday at the UC.

Watched the 3rd period and OT tonite, amazing series so far and expect more of the same for game 6.

I don't have enough time to for a second sport sadly. I love some playoff hockey though.

Went to game 1 and last night's game. What a series. If we can get the series back to Phoenix, I'll be at game 7.. and the Hawks will WIN!!

One of the craziest series I've ever seen. It really sucks that they don't have Hossa or Shaw right now.

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread. I was meaning to start one, but I haven't been online much recently. Overall it was an exciting series, which is obvious from the amount of OT games we had. There were a few things that I have been thinking about though.

First of all, the 3 game suspension to Shaw for his love-tap on the Phoenix goalie was a pathetic joke. Those are the only words I can think of to explain it. If the goalie was in net and Shaw ran at him, then that's a different story, because goalies have to be able to put themselves in vulnerable positions to stop shots, and therefore need to be sure that they wont get hit when they can't defend themselves. However, if you as a goalie come out of the crease and go behind the net to poke around at the puck, then as far as I'm concerned, all bets are off. Obviously one still should not flat-out check the goalie into the boards or anything, but a player should certainly be allowed to make some contact with the goalie in the pursuit of the puck behind the net. So if you're a goalie and want to leave your crease and skate around to get the puck, then don't expect that you're untouchable EVERYWHERE you go on the ice.

Secondly, the hit on Hossa was terrible. The Phoenix player who did it (Torres, from memory) is a repeat offender and, in my opinion, should have been suspended longer. I know that we weren't exactly looking like a dangerous team out there even WITH Hossa, but having him there still would have been a nice help in the scoring department.

Finally, the games really just came down to the goalies in the end. I honestly believe that we're a better team than Phoenix, but we ran into them while their goalie was hot and we lost. That's what can happen sometimes. Hopefully next year we don't run into any hot goalies in the playoffs, and that our own goalies (Crawford and Emery, if he is still here) can be a bit more consistent through the year and peak around playoff time.
