Hawks trade J. Hayes and Olsen... Get Versteeg back from FL

Post#1 » by GRADEN » Fri Nov 15, 2013 8:50 pm

Not sure how I feel about this.... Isn't shaw a better but less skilled version...

Olsen is a recent #1 and Hayes was a Bicks- Buffs trainee... Seems like 2 high prospects to give up. Our blue line prospect depth isn't what I once thought it was, we need some coaching and drafting to pull that back up quick

True and this is also true... One of the best run franchises in sports last 5-6 years. Yet... Football still king in this country.

I was pretty stoked with this trade, to be honest. I've always been a Versteeg fan, and I hated it when we lost him a few years back. I love his versatility, the way that he has the skill to play effectively on a scoring line, but also the defensive game to play a 3rd or 4th line role. As far as the prospects we gave up, I'm not too fussed. Hayes has size, but that's about all I've seen from him. His skating isn't great, and he doesn't really seem to do much of anything out on the ice. I wouldn't have minded if we'd kept Olsen because I feel like he's not very far off being ready to play NHL-level hockey on a consistent basis, but it's not like he was a stud prospect or anything. I like the 7 man defensive rotation we have now (I'm including Brookbank in that group) and I know that the team has high expectations for Clendenning as well, but I would still expect us to add something to the talent pool, either in trade this season or free agency or the draft at the end of the year.
