2013 NHL Playoffs, Rnd. 2 - Hawks/Red Wings

Post#1 » by TNBT » Mon May 13, 2013 4:31 pm

I'm really looking forward to this matchup. As someone who started out as a Red Wings fan many years ago, I have a lot of respect for some of their guys, specifically Datsyuk and Zetterberg. This should be a real test for our team to see just how far we have come from last season. Anyone care to offer any predictions?

Stronger opponent than Minnesota, but still another series the hawks will be heavily favoured. Very similar stylistically, the hawks are just a lot better. Not too bad up front (and capable of finishing a lot of those opportunities the Wild couldn't) but that defense is pretty mediocre. Howard is capable of stealing a game or two on his own for sure though.

Crawford doesn't crap the bed, and they stay out of the box this over in 5 or 6. Regardless of how many games it goes I do expect the individual games to be fairly close though.

Blackhawks in 5. They are well-rested, hopefully not rusty, and the more talented team.

Bolland and Emery will be back. More depth helps.

Detroit sucks. Let's go Hawks!

Cliff Levingston will be interested to see how Quennville sets up the lines as a result. Line 1 is the same obviousy but Bolland is usually centering for Sharp and Kane. Does Bolland retake that line and Handzus moves down to the 3rd line, bumping Kruger to 4, Shaw to wing and ? to the bench? Right now, the Hawks' website lists the following as the lines:

1. Saad/Toews/Hossa
2. Sharp/Bolland/Kane
3. Bickell/Shaw/Stalberg
4. Carcillo/Kruger/Frolik
Handzus/Mayers

Cliff Levingston would sit Carcillo, move Shaw to wing on the 4th line and put Handzus in at center on the 3rd line.

Bolland has centered the 2nd line since the post-SC overhaul, but was put on the 3rd line today, since Stalberg was dropped. Handzus centered the 2nd line. It was odd, but I'm guessing Q was going for balance on all 4 lines.

As for the game...well, wow. Just utter domination after a lethargic first period. I could count on my fingers how many times Detroit was able to get out past the neutral zone. The Hawks just threw wave after wave of lines. The speed to the outside killed Detroit all game long. It's ironic because this would've been the perfect game for Stalberg's speed. Once the Hawks got in the offensive zone, the work along the boards was so damn impressive. Just cycle after cycle. If the rest of the games are like tonight's, this series is over in 4.

Bolland should stay on the 3rd line. He`s been a disaster all year in the top 6. Last night was the best and most comfortable he`s looked in a while. Ideally Sharp should be centering the 2nd line like he did in the cup year (been wanting that for years now though, so probably not happening) Stalberg slots into the vacancy on the 2nd line and you put Handzus between Kruger and Fro (kruger was 0 for 11 on FO`s last night). Handzus is only valuable if he`s winning most of his FO`s.

I'm so pissed I missed game one. I'll have to put an alert in my phone for game two. At least we had a win, which is the important thing.

:D everyone from the Bulls board
LeBron has a 17.8% field goal percentage and a 12.5% 3-point percentage in clutch situations, and also made 20 of 116 game winning/tying shots in 4th/OT during his career

So has everyone pretty much given up on this series? I think I found the Monday loss more frustrating than the last. It's probably homerism but I don't feel they've been outplayed at all aside from one game and could realistically come back and win. I didn't feel that way last year against Phoenix or the year before versus the canucks (a game they took to game 7 OT and a series I'm sure they're remembering now). I don't know, three straight wins against the Wings doesn't seem all that crazy. I'd feel differently if it was against the Sharks or Kings.

So pumped for game 6 of this series! It's on at 10am tomorrow morning (Aussie time), which is like under 12 hours away! So freaking excited. I'm going to be at my laptop listening to the game online while wearing my lucky Toews jersey. What are you guys planning to do for the big game?

It's been interesting how the Wings keep going after Toews...

Confident about game 7, seems like it's been an up and down series, and while the team didn't play particularly well tonight, they still got the win. 3rd and 4th lines were huge in the 3rd.
