For a 1 - 2 - 1 start? Didn't they win last night?

That is pretty shocking and downright depressing. I'm sure there is some issues we can't see here. Savard brought the team back from the depths last season and now gets dumped after 2 losses on the night of his first win?

No one fires a guy for a 1-2-1 start. There had to be thoughts from management about this all off season. Obviously they think they've got a better guy for the job in Quennville.

OT: BlackHawks Fire Savard! WTF?

The Chicago Blackhawks fired head coach Denis Savard just four games into the season on Thursday, replacing him with NHL coaching veteran Joel Quenneville.

The team canceled its Thursday practice and scheduled an afternoon news conference for 5:30 p.m. ET.

"I'm disappointed but I guess it's the nature of the business," Savard said from his Chicago home Thursday.

"I know I was doing a good job, I'm dedicated to my work. Obviously they felt they had to make a change, so what can you do."

Savard, who was in the last year of his contract, was told he'd been fired Thursday morning by GM Dale Tallon.

"I knew I had to do well this year. We talked this summer and I was aware of that," Savard said.

The dismissal came hours after the team won its first game by beating Phoenix 4-1. The Blackhawks are now run by owner Rocky Wirtz, and the combination of a slow start and a big public relations push may have led to Savard's abrupt ouster.

Unbelieveable. They hired Quenneville as a scout in the off-season, if there was any doubt they shouldn't have brought Savard back.

what a classy guy. he said he is leaving w/ his head up high and wish the blackhawks and the new coach the best of luck. he still believes the blackhawks are going to win the cup and is disappointed he wont be a part of it, but is glad to be involved w/ the team in his 1st year.

he didnt give a good reason why he was fired. there still go to be more to it. he just said management wasnt happy w/ the start.

This makes no sense. MJ&H were mentioning some points that perhaps the management didn't like the lines he was making. Supposedly Scotty Bowman thinks Patrick Sharp is a 4th line player. He should be at the wing instead of at center.

I love Savard because he is a Chicago icon, but I don't think we could have expected that to mean he would have kept his job until he did not want it anymore. Management is definitely stressing winning, and apparently they thought the best way to achieve that was by firing Savard.

At least with Joel Quenneville the Blackhawks are not downgrading their head coaching position.

Dale Tallon looks so uncomfortable answering questions about the firing.

Bowman is nuts if he thinks Sharp is a 4th line player. You don't pay a 4th line player $4-5 million a year. If he ends up playing on the 4th line, Chicago just got robbed on that contract extension.

I don't know how much of that is true though. After all it is coming from guys who just jumped on the Blackhawks bandwagon.

I wonder what that position will be, but I doubt Savvy stays. The Blackhawks are only doing that in order to protect the legacy and love the city has for him.
