Katz makes offer to purchase team

Post#1 » by Crowned » Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:43 pm

Rexall Founder and Chairman Daryl Katz has made a new offer to purchase the Edmonton Oilers, according to a statement released on Thursday. A new conference is expected to take place tonight in Edmonton.

According to the release, the terms of the offer are being delivered directly to the shareholders of the Edmonton Investors Group, and EIG founding chairman Cal Nichols said that it was an offer that he would "enthusiastically support." Sources familiar with the bid say it's an offer for shares with an asset purchase value of $188 million.

Looks like the deals going through this time around. Either way, Katz doesn't look like he's giving up anytime soon.

I really hope he gets the. Its soo much easier to get things done with one guy calling the shots, also we will finally get a new arena.

It's a done deal. Now they're just waiting for league approval.

The committee looked at six possible downtown sites, but they aren't listed in the report, for fear of prompting land speculation. All six had plenty of parking within a 10-minute walk, committee chair Lyle Best told The Journal's editorial board after the mayor's speech.

Where will people park at a downtown arena?

"That's a very critical point, and one I have to defend almost every day," Best said. "We already have a large and significant inventory of parking spots (downtown) that are not typically used after 5 o'clock."

Oilers tickets increasingly go to corporations, he added, and many businessmen will be able to walk to the game from their downtown offices.

While parking does have to be considered a potential obstacle, it seems that those involved in the planning stages feel Downtown has enough parking to support the arena in of itself. It's certainly a valid concern, but even then, there are always alternative methods of transportation that don't involve finding parking (bus travel, LRT).
