Habs Offseason 2011
Alright guys, lets get all of this offseasons news and signings in this thread. We don't have enough activity in here to warrant a bunch of different threads everytime someone is signed, etc... so. Here we go! I'll start it off...
The Montreal Canadiens have signed D Hal Gill to a 1 year - 2.25 million dollar contract | Thoughts?

Re: Habs Offseason 2011
Gill was serviceable; and the contract is reasonable.
He made 2.25 last season and pretty well delivered on what we wanted from the guy.
The deal brings the Habs to around 33m in committed salary for next season before we start discussing the glut of free agents on the books,

Re: Habs Offseason 2011
Indeed. I like the deal for the Habs as it's only a 1 year commitment, and Gill IS still a serviceable dman. He wont rack up the points by any means, but can he ever lock it down on the PK. Not to mention he's also a key piece of the Habs leadership group, who all the guys look up to (not just literally, but figuratively as well).
Would I have been happier with Gill at a lower salary? Definitely. But am I disappointed with having him back at 2.25 for 1 year? Not in the least.
Now we play the waiting game and see what else unfolds for the Habs. However, the Gill signing pretty much guarantees that Wiz will not be back. Also, we need to find a way to get rid of Spacek...

Re: Habs Offseason 2011
With Sopel and the Hammer UFA's this summer I could see the Habs trying to retain Wisniewski, I would imagine it depends on Andrei Markov's knee.
I would imagine defense will be the "word" this summer, however all three back-up goaltenders the Habs had under contract are all UFA's, and I have to wonder if the Habs will opt for a Francophone reclamation project behind Price.

Re: Habs Offseason 2011
The Habs are pretty much guaranteed to re-sign Markov in my opinion. I think a lot of people have forgotten how important a piece he is to the club. Imagine a healthy Markov AND Subban! Amazing. Also, with Emelin signing and coming to the NHL, it's pretty much a done deal that Markov will be a Hab, and will tutor Emelin.
Wiz would be nice to keep, but I don't see him being worth the 4+ mill that he is going to get from someone. Pairings will look like this, prob:
Markov - Emelin
Subban - Gill
Gorges - Spacek/Weber
I don't think the Habs are gonna be on the lookout for a franco goalie. I'd like to see Alex Auld back, as he played his role well. Price still needs that steady back up who isnt fighting for mins. behind him for a couple more years.

Habs re-sign Kostitsyn to a 1 year 3.25 million/year contract. Same money he's been making the past 3 years. He's a UFA next year, so we'll see how he plays in a contract year.

Habs re-sign Mathieu Darche to a 1 year - 700k contract. I personally love what he brings to the team, so I'm happy to have him back in the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge.

Markov re-signed for 3 years at 5.75 million/per. Lets hope he can stay healthy now and earn that paycheck!

Be he won't, and we'll lose the Wiz because of it. I've liked almost every PG move to date, except this one. Huge mistake.

Re: Habs Offseason 2011
Don't like the Markov signing;
However on the off chance he play's half the games with 3/4 the skill he did its not an unreasonable deal.
Three years is what gets me;

What do you think the chances are of the Habs landing Jagr? There's been rumblings that this team is after him.

Excellent pick up by the Habs and I also like the upgrade we did in our backup goaltender, gives us more to work with when Price isn't doing it.

Re: Habs Offseason 2011
I dunno, u guys have more optimism than I...
Markov deal was gross. Did they miss the part with all the recurring knee injuries this guy's had? Yikes
Kostysin sucks. I guess it isn't unreasonable if it's on the same terms as he was on, but I'd just prefer he get's off my team...
Cole is okay, I certainly like the kind of player he is, his style is desperetly needed in MTL, but man, a broken neck, and a few other injuries too... hard not to be a little concerned about that. Montreal is certainly taking a few risks... let's hope it pay's off.

Cole seems overpaid, but then they all are.
Let's just hope he plays his best.
Dumping Gomez would be nice, any suckers I mean takers?

Re: Habs Offseason 2011
Seeing as there isn't even a thread for the regular season yet, I'ma post my prediction here...
Montreal will be the best Canadian team this year. I'm not talking regular season, I'm talkin playoff's.
At the end of the day, the Canadiens will go the furthest of any Canadian team. Eat your heart out Vancouver.
