The best two games ever at the time of my retirement were FFVII and Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic.
FFVII is one of the greatest of all time. I am waiting for this winter to start playing the remake. Also wants to get into KOTOR at some point.
There are lots of games that use The Old Republic in there name. Try to make sure you get the original. It's terribly outdated by now, but the story line might be the best ever in a video game.
KOTOR was the GOAT. Graphics and gameplay are incredibly dated now, but man that story.
I played the crap out of that, and even tried to play again with my old cd-roms a few years ago only to realize its so old modern hardware won''t play it. I think you can still find it on Steam though.
KOTOR II had the makings of a great game too if they hadn't rushed it out and shipped a game that was half completed.
I played a restored content mod of it many years ago that made the game a lot better.
Star Wars the Old Republic (
https://www.swtor.com/), a MMO which launched in 2011 and is still running, acts as kind of a KOTOR III, particularly the jedi knight story. It's a shared universe and is set 300 years after KOTOR II.
There are 8 original class stories to play which are well worth the time if you like that kind of game.
The game is kind of the dollar store version of a MMO as far as offering new content, and is in quasi-maintenance mode at the moment, but it's completely free to play if you don't mind a few restrictions.
