MN/CLE/SAC (jaric+smith)

Post#1 » by Krapinsky » Thu Jan 17, 2008 10:35 pm

I posted this on an ongoing thread here...

http://www.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic. ... 0&start=12

...but, I think it's an interesting fair trade that's great for the t-wolves, and I would like some quality feedback on this one.

MN Gets: Eric Snow
MN Gives: Jaric + Smith

CLE Gets: Jaric + Smith + Bibby + K. Thomas
CLE Gives: Snow + Gooden + Hughes

SAC gets: Gooden + Hughes
SAC gives: Bibby + Thomas

I actually like this trade alot.

MN: saves two years on Jarics deal. Lose Smith, but he's behind Al so who cares. In the meantime, more 'Toine at the 4.

SAC: gets the PF they need badly.
New starting 5 = Beno/Martin/Artest/Gooden/Miller

CLE: improves the quality of their team for a playoff run this year, and they can resign Smith and have him split time with Verajao.

CLE: new roster = serious title contender
Bibby/Gibson
Jaric/Brown
James/Pavlovic
Verajao/Smith/Thomas
Big Z/Verjao

I think you could include CLE's 1st (who would cost them double) and still get a "yes" from them.

That value would be more in line with the other offers Smith + Jaric have been getting.

I don't see how that's accurate. I doubt Smith could net us a 1st, then adding Jaric's contract on top of that... no way.

If anything I was thinking we'd have to add our early second round pick. Essentially we'd be trading 1/2 year of Smith to save $14 million, and give us great cap room in '09

Deal?

(I think this is unrealistic)

raferfenix wrote:Bucks could really use a backup PF like Smith. We have discussed Jaric and Gadzuric swaps before involving a bucks future pick and Ryan Gomes, but if the deal involves Smith instead I bet we get a ton more interested.

Bucks would need to send Villanueva somewhere else for the deal to work---how much would the Wolves be willing to give for him?

ha. i don't what to say except i strongly disagree with all of those people. haha. I think if any of those offers were on the table (except for the one where we give a pick for Diogu) we'd have to do it in a heartbeat.

well looking at Cleveland I insist on them adding a pick. they get a lot of talent (bibby, smith) plus they get role players who can hustle (jaric, thomas) and they can fill they voids they either have (bibby as pg) or they gained through this trade (thomas + smith for gooden or bibby for the offensive purpose that hughes left - only to say some positives about hughes )

it makes too much sense for them because if they play smith they can play sideshow bob alongside him and they should match quite well. imagine smith on a pick'n'roll with lebron...

Wow I would actually go the other way on Cleveland....I think they are taking on too much salary.

I dont know how much truth there is to this, but didnt we see stories a few days ago that suggested Cleveland wouldnt trade for Bibby if it meant having to take on Thomas? If so, I cant see them taking on Jaric too.

Sure they get Smith, but maybe only for a 1/2 season....if they're taking back Jaric and Thomas they probably wouldnt be able to afford to resign Smith next year.

oh I didn't look at it in terms of financial reasons. good point die hard. but I think talentwise this deal is good enough for them to take the contracts. they should give lebron some talent because he might sign elsewhere if they don't get enough talent

CLE is only over the lux next year. The signing of Varejao is all over the lux, and next year's contract to Gibson will be doubled too. However, in 2009-10, then they have cap flexibility. Moreover, Jaric's contract expires just when they need to give LeBron a new one. The Cavs clearly need to add talent, and they can do it by paying for it in the future.

Personally, I think you should just leave out SAC altogether, and deal Jaric + Craig Smith for Eric Snow + a lottery-protected pick.

1. This gets the Cavs +18.6 ppg, +6.8 rpg, and +2.8 apg.
2. SAC want to move Thomas because of his bad salary - they won't take a worse one in Larry Hughes.
3. This moves an unproductive Snow
4. Craig Smith provides low post scoring which they need.
5. Jaric would match well with Gibson, Hughes
6. The Cavs really need Gooden.
7. The pick has value, but maybe less to them then to others. Its additional guaranteed salary that year that is doubled, and the pick obviously doesn't help this season (07-08), and probably not the next (08-09), for a win-now CLE
