Where was that post that you went into great detail about how we need to let Ratliff expire for luxury tax reasons? I wanna look at it, but dont know where it is

Thanks basti!

A couple comments since I last posted about this:

1. I've been trying to run down the exact amount amount of Juwon Howard buy-out. The only thing I can find is a quote by Glen Taylor that it's $10 mil (out of $14,259,300). I'm running with that. In a buy out, it breaks down in the same proportions as the original contract, so that means this year Juwon gets

2006-07: $4,827,586

.. and next year ..

2007-08: $5,172,414.

The amount I listed before was without any discount for the buy-out, so this news clears a little more valuable room under the lux for next year .. about $2.2 mil.

2. This post was in response to trade offers for Ratliff's expiring, but I tend to look at it like we have a certain amount of money we can use next season, and we can pluck things from the menu to buy them. The total money would be $11.7 (Ratliff) + $2.2 (Juwon buy-out savings) + $2.2 (assuming a lux around $68 mil) = $16 mil.

From that $16 mil, we can choose to pay for the following:

$3.3-$4.0 MIN 1st round Pick
$2.0-$3.0 MIA 1st round Pick
$0.43 MIN high 2nd round Pick
$3.5-$5.0 Ryan Gomes (extension)
$3.0-$4.0 Craig Smith (extension)
$3.54-?? Sebastian Telfair (qualifying offer)
$0.77 Chris Richard
??? Free agent signing with cba exceptions.

At this point, I don't know who's going to be valuable to our team next year. I want more time to decide, and the money gives us the financial flexibility. If you've decided "No way do we keep Telfair!" or someone else, it creates a lot more flexibility. The MIA pick is looking a lot less like a cost next season, and I don't think that's a bad thing. A Ratliff trade might work in these cases, particularly if we received some expirings back.

However you use it, the menu should be helpful of what we've got to spend, and how we want to use it.

Lastly, this link to canis hoopus might be useful to you too. Its helped me.

I think we should make a move for Gilbert with the ratliff contract!!!

hell no. he said he'll opt out this summer to get a bigger contract plus he's not that player we're looking for though his scoring would be pretty intriguing...

but I don't think I'd do it because chances that he won't resign with us are likely

No point in factoring in a Miami 1st this year.

Using your JuHo buyout numbers, I've got the following for 2008 commitments:

Jefferson $11.0mil
Walker $9.1mil
Jaric $6.6mil
JuHo $5.2 mil
Huddy $5.0mil
High 1st $4.8mil
Buck $4.0mil
Foye $2.8mil
Brew $2.7mil
Madsen $2.6mil
McCants $2.6mil
High 2nd $0.4mil
High 2nd $0.4mil

For a total of $57.3mil and 11 roster spots committed. I don't believe we'll keep both 2nd rounders, but lets roll with this scenario trade-free for a moment.

Using a $68mil lux, that gives the Wolves $10.7 to work with... I'm not sure where this differs from your $16mil figure. Obviously there's a huge drop (over $1mil) from the 1st pick in the draft to the 4th pick, but I would imagine it's best to go with scenario with the most cash committed.

Anyone else think $10.7 isn't a big enough pie for Smith, Gomes, and Telfair?

You factored the picks in as sunk costs. Looks good.

I think you're right. And Chris Richard too. I tried to make estimates, using the Canis Hoopus numbers, and if everything is the minimum, it takes us up to 15 roster spots amd almost exactly $10.7 mil (so I'm still rooting for us to get that top pick!).

No matter how much we like all these guys, I think we need to trade at least one to be safe, for the best future considerations it will get. Alternately, using a player to move a contract (particularly Jaric) would be very helpful.

Personally, I'd like to consider UFA Diop this Summer, and maybe take a flyer on Patrick O'Bryant if he's cheap enough.
