karch34 wrote:I'm not really up on a lot of the new bands, but in that genre I like Velvet Revolver, The Killers, and Robert Randolph & the Family Band.

For classic rock love Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, The Kinks, and the Clash. Have gotten heavy into The Band, which falls somewhat in that category.

Old school funk like Earth Wind and Fire and Confunkshun.

Love the old blues like John Lee Hooker, BB King, and Buddy Guy (who I met at his restaurant in Chicago)

Like some of the old school rap like Sugar Hill Gang, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five, Run DMS, some NWA and Public Enemy.

Wife's into country, but the only ones I can really listen to are Johnny Cash, Toby Keith, and Alabama.

Love the old hair metal: Great White, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Dokken, Cinderella, and all of those.

Used to be big in Metallica, even saw them back in 1992. But after their first 4-5 albums my interest dwindled.

I used to have an Earth Wind & Fire album (on vinyl). I looked for it after you posted this and couldn't find it. I guess I gave it away some time back.

I like your format so I'll copy:

"newer" (probably not new to most of you) bands that I like: Coldplay, Audioslave

Classic Rock favorites (a sampling): Pink Floyd (GOAT), Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, ZZ Top, U2, REM, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty

Blues-rock: the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan, Indigenous

Rap/hip hop: none (sorry guys)

Country: only ones I can stomach for extended periods are Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash

A Favorite band that defies genre: Dead Can Dance

U2 and REM are officially classic rock now? But Michael Stipe and Bono feel so youthful and exhuberant still... and hip.

Yeah, but they've both been around for 20+ years. I couldn't justify calling them alternative rock. The whole genre labeling thing is really stupid, imo but that doesn't stop me from perpetuating it anyway.

I agree that being around that long they almost have to fall into classic. Unless you wanted to say Original Alternative.

I just got Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible" the other day. After all the hype I became curious. I like it, but it's definitely different from most of the stuff out there and not very radio friendly.

Earth, Wind, and Fire on vinyl? That's awesome. I can't remember what I did with some of my old vinyl. Years ago my cousin gave "The Wall" and "Moving Pictures" on vinyl. I didn't have a huge selection, but I think it included Molly Hatchet "Flirting with Disaster", Jethro Tull "Aqualung", and of course the one every on in their mid-30s on seemed to have at one point Michael Jackson's "Thriller".

I wish I could see them once in my life because back then I was too young to attend concerts

@ dr.krapinsky: do silverchair play again as well? my sister used to be a dedicated fan of them but after the singer (daniel jones/johns right?) suffered a serious disease I read that he actually had no plans to keep doing the silverchair project. instead he started a new one which was said to be really bad but I haven't heard anything yet.

 Rage Against and Silverchair both just toured australia with the Big Day Out tour. They were two of the headline acts

They were both dissapointing to see live, niether played with the energy you'd expect from juust big bands, on such big stages. (I got to see them both at the Big Day Out at the Gold Coast :) )

depends on what you like in terms of rock.

Thier old stuff is reminicant of Nirvana in some songs, and led to thier major popularity in australia. I personally love thier older stuff, not a fan of thier music that they have come out with recently.

Id suggest

Freak

Ana's Song

I Miss you Love

those are a few of my personal favourites

I personally am a fan of hip hop / rap, and dance / techno / trance / anything in that general genre

Dizzee Rascal is my favourite artists, a garage rapper from england.

im also big into the old school rap scene, NWA, Ice Cube, Snoop, 2pac and Biggie.

Also newer rap, like Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West as well as Eminem.

in terms of dance, there is really no one artist that i particularly like, although i can name a few who i do like more than the othres, ahha.

firstly, Tiesto, who is one of the great Djs of all time.

The Presets, and australian outfit are a joy to listen to, as is Ferry Corsten and Justice.

Im a big fan of the Ministry of Sound cds, which are basicly mixtapes of many different artists. The Annual is always a good album, and so is GateCrashers Classics, and all the Gatecrasher albums (both from ministry of sound).
The Hard NRG albums from Ministry is also great, really good if your pinging,

Australian club (in Melbourne) One Love also releases Cds, and they are generally of a very high quality, so im also a big fan of them.

As you can tell, i love music,

if anyone has a question about anything ive written, ask, ill tell you anything i can for you

I was always intrigued by dizzie rascal but I always forgot (strange as it sounds) to buy a record by dizzie. I've seen a few vids of him in tv or have heard a few songs in the radio but I've failed to buy a record so far. but what I know of him is really cool. in general I really like that british garage rap stuff. though I wouldn't say The Streets/mike skinner is a garage rapper as well I really loved the first record he made. the new stuff isn't that good to me.

and listening to silverchair now is kinda cool but back then when they had the biggest popularity my sister was a die hard silverchair fan and she listened to "miss you love" the whole day... gosh I hated that song with a passion but now I'm kinda cool with silverchair though I haven't heard the new stuff yet.

I can see the problem with all those bands reuniting and not living up to the expectations. last year when the smashing pumpkins had a gig in germany (Rock am Ring) they seemed to be powerless. well I just saw them on the TV but even there it kinda seemed powerless and a few friends of mine who have been to Rock am Ring said the same. same with Guns'n'Roses. after they reunited (or Axl Rose tried to...) they sucked... I think it might be some curse or something

the Silverchair lead singer is an anorexic

Daniel Johns has a secret he's only now telling -- and anyone's free to hear it. The Silverchair frontman has used his music, rather than the Ricki Lake show, to reveal his on-going battle with anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder that primarily affects women.| "Ana's Song (Open Fire)," the new single from the trio's Neon Ballroom, is a frank assessment of Johns' life with the disease, an addiction to starvation that, he says, made him "eat what he needed...to stay awake."

Anyone else excited to see Tom Petty perform at halftime of the Super Bowl?

A guy I work with told me he doesn't like Petty because "he is an old doobie smoker". But he likes Snoop Dogg..

Didn't see Guns'n'Roses on their comeback but they really weren't that great live the first time around IMO every song was the same half the song, 5 minute Slash guitar solo then the other half of the song.

Now i like a guitar solo as much as anyone else but not for that long in the middle of every song.

The one band i wish i had seen live is Nirvana.I had tickets for some of their gigs in London and then a couple of weeks before Kurt took the overdose in Rome and then months later they finally rescheduled them and a month or two before the new date he blew his head off with the shotgun.

Better than a lot of other halftime shows. The one thing I didn't like was he kind of looked mechanical. All the songs were pretty much the same as studio, which was kind of weird.

Wow, Andyhop. Suicidal Tendencies. That takes me back. "All I wanted was a Pepsi"

They should have saved the money on booking him and just played his videos on the big screen.I mean he was fine and everything but nothing special about the performance.

Halftime shows are generally like that. At least there weren't any wardrobe malfunctions. :o
