MIN-MEM-NO .. Ratliff deal

Deeney reminds me that I've posted a lot about not being able to trade Ratliff, and I agree that letting ratliff expire and resiging some of Gomes, Telfair and/or Craig Smith is Plan A. However, with the Gasol deal demonstrating again the great value the real NBA puts on expirings, I thought I'd explore the option of trying to cash in on that trade value.

My argument for letting Ratliff expire was for re-signing some pups, but what if we included a pup or two? We'd get more trade value back, plus using the expiring wouldn't hurt as much, since we would need less money to sign that guy. I posted an example in the Gasol thread, but here's another one:

NO GIVES: Julian Wright, Hilton Armstrong, Ely, Bobby Jackson, Ryan Bowen, Bernard Robinson, 2008 lotto-protected 1st
NO GETS: Mike Miller, Cardinal, Craig Smith

Massive production increase and a legitimate starting SG. They get rid of pieces and move Bobby Jackson's bad deal, trading prospects for current talent.

MEM GIVES: Mike Miller, Brian Cardinal
MEM GETS: Theo Ratliff, Ryan Bowen, Bernard Robinson, Ely

MEM loves cash savings. This uses a not cheaply-priced Miller as their last chance to move the unmovable .. Brian Cardinal, and saves $33 million in 2008 and 2009. MEM takes back all expirings.

MIN GIVES: Theo Ratliff, Craig Smith
MIN GETS: Julian Wright, Hilton Armstrong, Bobby Jackson, 2008 lotto-protected 1st

MIN eats Bobby Jackson's deal and faces $10 mil in salary for next season, but gets long-range pieces. This might jeopardize resigning one of Telfair or Gomes though, so I'm not sure I'd do it. However, using MIN as an intermediary seems like a decent idea.

This isn't a bad idea. Wright and Armstrong could fit long term, plus we'd pick up another pick and B-Jax contract would expire next year with Buckner and Walker. So we'd take an extra year of being over the cap for 3 young pieces. Who'd the lotto protected pick come from, assume New Orleans?

If it wouldn't prevent Telfair and Gomes from being re-signed then I could be on board. My only hesitation is that if we're moving an expiring like Ratliff, I'd like to get more of a 2nd star type. Taking this farther than the initial idea if we did this and Deng/Iguadola want out and the pick comes next year then we could do a S&T of with pieces of Walker, BJax, Buckner, Wright, Boston 2009 pick and New Orleans 2009 pick.

I assume it will be NO because MEM won't trade 1st rounders while rebuilding

I agree, it looks decent for everyone depending on who sends the pick, I assume it's NO. One other thing, are we sure Memphis wants to give up Miller, I don't know if they have any 2 gaurds left beside Juan Carlos Navvaro...I am not sure if Memphis takes this deal, but as a Wolf, I LOVE IT!

I'd rather stick with plan A and resign Gomes and Telfair. This isn't bad for a plan B.

I initially had a pick heading that way, but then I counted up the savings. My thinking went like this:

Is Mike Miller worth $9.5 mil/yr, for three years? I think so. Even though max deals go for $13, Miller is productive, and $9.5 seems reasonable.

Is Mike Miller worth $17 mil/year for three years? No way! But that would be the price of NO's new acquisitions if Cardinal rode the bench. Now New Orleans gets to move Bobby Jackson's 2-year, $6 mil deal, so its not all bad for the Hornets, but I think Memphis, particularly now, would jump at the chance to avoid paying guaranteed salaries to Miller + Cardinal of $17 mil/year for the next two years. With Theo and Kwame's expiring, they can also make an immediate splash in free agency this Summer.

The deal is pretty good for us, though.
