Does McHale draft as penance for past sins?

Post#1 » by revprodeji » Sun Mar 9, 2008 2:59 am

Many of Mchale's draft choices have some sort of guilt attached.

Ebi--could be McHale's attempt to strike it rich with a high school kid like he did with KG in order to make up for losing so many picks

Wally--closest thing to larry Bird McHale could find

-Foye, tried to get Marbury 2.0 for KG

-Brewer, perhaps the "josh howard" type he messed up with the Ebi pick

I do not want to turn this into a pro-con McHale thread. Just thought the draft history was interesting.

btw, Interestng pre-lotto talk (shad)-

The Minnesota Timberwolves are reportedly his biggest fans in the lottery,

This being said, who is our pick this year?

Depends on where we pick. I don't think Mchale has many more players to make up for like you're implying.

As RC said it depends on where we pick. I think it will be a center because he never brought a good to the Wolves in the past.

*Unless there is a clear cut choice when we pick.

I have a feeling that this is our year in the draft so im guessing we'll have a top 2 pick. For me that leaves us drafting one of beasley, rose, mayo.

I don't think McHale drafts out of guilt or penance, but I do think he has a few specific types of players that he's prone to fall for.

Long, skinny athletes with defensive potential: KG, Ebi (he was one of the few guys willing to defend LeBron straight up), Brewer, Loren Woods, FA signings like Joe Smith and Eddie Griffin

Athletic 6'3-6'4" guards with shoot-first mentalities- Foe, McCants, Marbury, Wright, FA signings like Chris Carr, and Billups, trading for Peeler

Undersized, physical interior guys- Craig Smith, Gary Trent, Andrae Patterson, Richard, Mad Dog

Undersized, shoot first guards in general- Marcus Taylor, Louis Bullock, Igor Rakocevic, Hudson, Blake Stepp

Token white guys- Rasho, Paul Grant, Mercy Pick (Rick Rickert), Wally

Nowadays he also seems to like guys with college experience in winning programs. It should also be noted that these weren't the types of guys he pursued in the KG trade, so maybe those were the types that he felt fit best around KG.
"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''
