This is probably my favorite trade down scenario that I've seen so far.

It would take more than a former 2nd round pick in order to convince me to trade down two slots. That's a significant drop-off in talent. Mayo/Beasley as opposed to Love/Gallinari.

...sigh...

Marc Gasol is worth far more than the 2nd round pick he was selected with, because since he was drafted, he's completely changed his body, and improved his game to the point that he was named MVP of the second best pro league in the world, despite being 23, even though the ACB is generally a league that devours its young to an even greater degree than the NBA does.

Ginobili was a 2nd round pick, too, but by the time he actually came to the NBA, he had been the best player in Europe for years. He was an immediate impact player in the NBA. I don't think M.Gasol is going to be a star, but he's produced as the #1 guy on a pretty good team in a very strong league, and I'm very confident that he'll help an NBA team in 2009.

Is Gasol were draft eligible, he'd be one of the 2-3 top rated centers in this class, despite being 23 rather than 20 like most of the prospects are. Just because we haven't seen him play much, doesn't mean the NBA teams haven't; he's gone against NBA players in FIBA competitions and done well, and played agaisnt better competition in Spain than any of the NCAA draft prospects. He's good.

As for a comparison to Pekovic (who I know even less about, fwiw) Gasol is more valuable because he's a FA who wants to play in the NBA in 2009, who actually went to an American HS for a year earlier in Pau's career with Memphis. Pekovic has a long-term contract for big money in Europe, with no NBA buy-out,m and he's actually told teams not to draft him because he doesn't like the American game and currently has no plans to ever play in the NBA. Other than that, sure, he'd be an option, too...

I trust you've seen more of him than I have (which is none), but the guy hasn't set foot in the league yet and he's worth trading two spots down for? Apparently he's lost weight, but with his current frame, he doesn't look like he moves very well. He doesn't look fluid. He looks like a scrappy guy who will do the little things for you to win, but he looks like a 12 and 12 and 3 kind of guy in his prime, at best, to me.

Did he have any legit 7 footers to go against? He look slow quite frankly.

Kind of reminds me of a more in shape, probably more athletic Arvydas Sabonis.

If Marc Gasol is this good, Darko at $7 mil becomes a negative contract. Give Gasol the playing time.

Walker + McCants for #5 + Darko + Cardinal.

That saves MEM $7 mil more than the Lee + Malik offer from NYK.

I do not know what to think about this situation (other than shrink going completely off topic) I have only seen what everyone else has here about Gasol. So my opinion there hardly matters. I could only see us making this kind of trade if we were convinced Gallinari is a gem and we were doing this to secure a big we like (the young legit starter) and Gallinari.

it all comes down to what our front office sees in Gasol and how high we are on Gallinari.

Sorry for being off-topic. I'm simply saying we can keep the #3 if we want the #5.

It's all good. You made the comment on another thread. I think the difference is Memphis is gaining both cap space, as well as a pf they really like in David lee. We could not offer both.
