Right now I would say only Jefferson and Miller are clearly better than Gomes. Foye probably is as well. McCants should be, but hasn't proven it yet. Love is a rookie, so not fair to make any predictions yet.

I know were not trying to compete for a championship, but I'd like a team that gives us the best chance to win without overpaying. I guess I don't see how having Brewer, Carney, Cardinal, Madsen, Smith, and others should prevent us from having a clearly better player like Gomes on the roster. I understand that people want Brewer and Carney to get their minutes, but they should earn them.

Oh, I'm not saying that, because there's not room for Gomes, that he shouldn't be brought back. I'm fine with Gomes, provided it's a two year contract. But that doesn't mean there's room for him any more than there's room for George. Some player(s) will be shorted minutes regardless. And I think that if the Wolves are going to bring back Gomes for the right price, it follows logically that they're willing to bring in someone else who will actually see some time on the court if Gomes goes somewhere else. (Besides a 3rd PG and the mythical 1/2/3).

I'm not advocating bringing in George at all, I just think it flows with some of the major themes of this off season: Can be had for cheap, wants to be here, veteran presence around the young core, etc.

I'm fine with bringing back Gomes or someone of equal talent. I just don't see any of the names listed so far as being any better than what we already have, let alone as good as Gomes. It strikes me as trying to find a body just for the sake of it.

Right now, Gomes would start on this team. Yes, either Brewer or McCants could start, but at this point in their careers they are better suited to come off the bench. Having a guy of Gomes' calibur for only about 3 million dollars, or even 1 million if he signs the tender is dirt cheap. Luke Walton makes over 4 million until the 2012-13 season and isn't near the type of player Gomes is. Gomes is a similar calibur player as James Posey, except one does his main work on the offensive end (Gomes) while the other does his thing on the defensive end (Posey). Posey is making 5.5 million next year, and will be making almost 7 million by 2011-2012.

Why isn't there room? This can be our wing rotation:

SG: Miller (28) / McCants (18) / Carney (5)
SF: Gomes (27) / Brewer (18) / Cardinal (GT)

It strikes me as finding a body just for the sake of it, too, but I'd be surprised if this organization can say to itself ,"We were only trying to retain Gomes to accumulate talent. We don't need another body ." Who knows, maybe they can. They've built a decent enough 9-10 man rotation already.

Foye and Telfair will be on the court at the same time some of the time. I think Miller will get more than 28 minutes (he had 35 mpg last year and 39 mpg the year before that), McCants will get more than that (27 last year), Brewer will get more than that (23 last year), and Carney will get more than that (14 last year).
