How are players and people in the organization, who have sacrificed their lives for the game of basketball, going to respect Simmons?

I'm not sure players need to respect the GM, and he'd probably hire his own top advisors who he'd be able to work just fine with.

Hiring Thomas would cause nothing but contempt and anger, hiring Simmons would cause interest. It's a huge difference.

I was using hyperbole, obviously even Taylor wouldn't hire Thomas due to his history.

I don't agree with you though. SOME people would have genuine positive interest if Simmons was hired, but I would be willing to bet that the majority of both fans and media would mercilessly mock the hiring as business as usual in the ridiculous Wolves front office. And they aren't going to sell tickets because of a GM change, they'll sell more tickets if they put a better team on the floor, which Simmons may or may not be capable of doing. I would expect that because he publicly mocks a lot of the GMs in the league in his columns, it would be difficult for him to bargain with most of them. And he knows little about college basketball, since he frequently berates its quality and talks about how he doesn't like watching it, so he's not going to contribute to the draft until he learns a lot. Personally, I'd would have wanted Lindsey, based on his professional history and the great recent history of guys who have worked in the Spurs front office.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

I don't have excessive expectations for Simmons as GM, but I do think would as a big of a financial boon as you could get for hiring a GM. It would increase interest, he said he would work for free his first year, and he also would write a book on the experience, which I would assume would have financial benefits for the team.
I have to admit if the Wolves hired Simmons, I would be simultaneously excited and embarrassed.

It wouldn't be the first time an unqualified pseudocelebrity found themselves in a leadership position in the state - only this time it wouldn't be elected office.

look, you can fill the government with legions of comedians and wrestlers, but I'll be damned if I allow the GM of my favorite team to be anyone other than a retired basketball player

The last NBA champions from Minnesota were built by Sid Hartman, what does that say about how hard it is to be a GM? OK, probably nothing. It's a completely different game now, and Sid probably wasn't senile at that point. Still...

Yeah, but I don't know if Bill Simmons is "close personal friends" with everyone. I'm sure it's much easier that way.
