This is the big one to me. Carney is probably still in the bottom 10% of basketball skill, after three years in the NBA. His jaw-dropping athleticism gets him by, but you can't become a significant player in this league if you're unable to improve your game. Three years and this lack of development are huge red flags suggesting a lack of work ethic in practice. Its probably what got him traded from PHI, and cost him an extension in MIN last season.

I think that's harsh. Players don't usually improve their ball-handling and court vision at the NBA level, which are his main faults. Brewer's got more potential because he's got a better feel for the game, but he's a worse shooter and a worse dribbler.

Carney is a cheap stopgap solution for next year.

Brewer is not that great at D, but it is easy to make the leap that he will play great D once he gets his confidence and gets some extra minutes

Carney vs Brewer is not the argument. Carney vs Ellington is. And the difference is that Carney is a chucker that is extremely inconsistent with a very low BBIQ. He is athletic, and he can get hot, but he can hurt a team just as fast.

You always say Carney has a low BBIQ, but I don't see it and I don't see how he hurts the team. For the most part he doesn't try to do things that he's unable to do.

There ought to be room for all three this year with proper roster management (ie do something with Bobby Brown and the glut of big men), but if someone has to go its Carney (because he's not under contract).

Dammit. I had a big post and I accidentally closed the tab.

Carney does not move without the ball. This is not because of effort. (Kid does try hard) He is just not a smart player. He should have killed on the back door cuts and we never saw it. He has 2 offensive moves. 1.) spot up baseline 2.) leak on a rebound and dunk in transition. Only excuse for this after his time in the league is his low BBIQ. He does not think when he plays

There was an article a little bit ago that had Carney as the least passing player at his position. To prove that point he has a Ast-r of 5. Yes. 5. with a To-r of 8.3 Those are waiveable numbers. For all his athletic ability his Reb-r was a 6.1. Yet per 36 he avg more FGA then Love. (He was 4th in FGA per 36) He also led us in 3pA per 36, yet was one of the least in FTA.

he also carried a negative number at both SG and SF with a net -5.6 SG and a -4.1 SF.

Good kid, but just a chucker last year.

He doesn't have a high BBIQ but I don't see him making dumb plays. He doesn't get many assists, but 0.6 TO's a game doesn't seem significant either. He stretches the floor, he gets easy buckets on breaks, and he's not going to get overwhelmed athletically by anyone on defense. He's not a starter, maybe not even a rotation player on a good team, but I think he's at the least a very good spot player on a good team. He's got very defined and useful strengths.

Oh, yea. if we are thinking he is a spot player I am fine with that. But I simply do not trust him in a rotation role.
