Well, actually this is the heart of the problem with the Jefferson/Love combo. We both agree that Love is going to have trouble against faster PF's - but this is also a common argument for playing Jefferson at center. In my opinion, neither guy is fast enough to guard PF's but neither guy is big enough to effectively guard centers. They have trouble guarding exactly the same players. Love is reasonably physical, but even against tall PF's like Gasol/KG/Wallace/etc he is so small that they look right over him - the situation is exacerbated against the bigger centers. Jefferson, while slightly bigger, doesn't seem as physical - and he's still overmatched by most centers despite his size advantage over Love. They are just a bad defensive combination, either one alone you might get by with due to the other skills they bring to the table but the combination doesn't bode well. Worse yet, to date Love hasn't shown any shooting touch at any range. I know you were big on him coming out of college, and his range was one of the reasons, but I've never seen it. He looked bad as a rookie. Hopefully he'll regain his touch, I don't think the wolves can expect him to get much more explosive around the basket so this will be a key to the development of his offensive game.

Still despite all my concerns about the effectiveness of the combination, I'll be the first to say we really haven't seen much of it. It seemed last year that Love and Jefferson spent just about the minimum time possible on the court together (when Jefferson was still active that is), maybe seeing them together this year will force me to re-evaluate.

I guess I just take for granted that Love will start hitting his jumper, but in general I like Love's strength defending big centers more than Jefferson, while I prefer Jefferson against the quick PFs.

I think DSW is spot on. What centers are going to be able to hang with Love going outside knocking down jumpers? Plus, there are only a few C's that could really take advantage of the defensive mismatch. Most of the legit guys with height/size advantages are getting long in tooth. Love is a smart guy he will figure out how to minimize those limitations. It's thinking outside of the box, but you are on to something here. (shhh, don't tell Casey)

I'd be pretty stoked if teams decided they're going to focus their gameplan around posting up their Dampiers and Chandlers and Haywoods on Love. Please do that, that's exactly what we'd want.

This is great, and I agree that Love could have some great success against players of that calibre which is why the Wolves would do well in the regular season.

The problem is when you play the good teams in the playoffs on a regular basis and Loves just gets beaten on over and over.

Bynum
Gasol
Duncan
Oden (When he finally puts it together)
Nene

All those guys will wear Love down in a playoff series.

The Love/Jefferson frontcourt pairing does have some amazing capabilities and I do think it will work, but don't forget the huge weakness it has, that against a top quality centre Both Love and Jefferson will get abused.
"That's why the last two years weren't guaranteed," Walsh said. "Either way, he knew it could have happened either way."
