Al's a 5 for him to be the most effective. This is why the Wolves have had the right idea in playing him nearly 25X as many minutes at the 5 rather than 4.
To best evaluate position ask what role a player plays best on the floor-
On Defense between 4 and 5-
Is best defending the rim or roaming the weakside and perimeter? Al's a poor defender at either position although he's a more than capable shot-blocker and rebounder for a 5. His standing reach which is more important than height is 9.2 which is adequate for an NBA center.
On Offense- Is more effective on the low-block or high-block/top of key?
This is a hard one to dispute- playing Al with a big like Hasheem Thabeet only clogs the lane with poor passing big men. This makes Al and the offense as a whole less effective.
