Boston gets: Shane Battier
Minnesota gets: JR Giddens, Tony Allen, and Brian Scalabrine
Houston gets: Chucky Atkins and Damien Wilkins

Tony Allen would be shown the door immediately, but the chance at JR Giddens as a prospect would be interesting. Obviously there would have to be some sort of balance thrown in to compensate Houston more for dumping the best player for just cap savings. Can't see Boston being interested in anyone else off either team, that either team would be willing to dump. Battier would be great as a back-up behind Pierce and Allen. Power shift in the East. :-)

I'd really love to have Battier in Portland, but I would also love to see a deal like that to go down just to watch Houston fans have a meltdown over how little they got in return for Battier.

Alright, I batted it around, and came up with this:

HOU GIVES: Brian Cook, Brent Barry, Lowry, Budinger, prot 1st ($8.3)
HOU GETS: Atkins + Tony Allen ($6.0)

BOS GIVES: Scalabrine + Tony Allen + Giddens ($6.94)
BOS GETS: Brent Barry + Wilkins + Lowry ($7.74)

MIN GIVES: Wilkins + Atkins ($7.1)
MIN GETS: Scalabrine + Cooke + Giddens + Budinger + prot HOU 1st ($8.8)

Why for HOU? $13 mil in savings for a protected 1st and Budinger? This deal saves enough money to get HOU under the lux threshold (waiving/including James White's unguaranteed deal) without touching their key players. They also don't have to buy-out anyone from their 17 man roster for more savings.

Why for BOS? JR Giddens for better upgrades to win now.

Why for MIN? They spend a little more than $4 mil now, and get expiring garbage contracts and two prosects and a protected pick.

HOU gets money
BOS gets talent
MIN gets future

I agree with Rev. The point of this orginal trade exactly would be??? None of these players mention do much for me. Although JR Giddens could have some upside.

Shrink- If you get any sort of first unloading Wilkins and Atkins consider it a Home Run.

Shrinkage, I think Houston likes Budinger given the 1st round money they gave him.
Lux tax be damned.

Yeah, Houston is going to dump on-court assets to get below the tax. Otherwise, they probably wouldn't have spent all that money going over the tax this offseason.

I think its time to emulate the new powerhouse in the west. This is thetime to bring back Rider (apparently ready to make a comeback) and McCants to do battle with the Grizz.

Well, HOU paid for the players they want, but they have 17 guaranteed contracts. They clearly are going to cut someone. Why not cut the guys that can save you $13 mil?

I tried to cut as far from the bone as possible (the injured Barry and questionable Cook), but they may need to keep Lowry. It just gets to be very hard to squeak them under the lux if they can't add a little more salary. Perhaps James White should be one, with his unguaranteed contract and Joey Dorsey?

Atkins alone is worth a lotto-protected 1st to a lottery team. If he can help get a team below the lux threshold, he's worth more.

Why would Allen be shown the door? I can tell you one person who would be disappointed:

They've been friends since they entered the league together, and Tony even helped Al out with his camp. If we got Tony then cut him immediately, I think Al would be pissed. I think he would immediately be our starting SG or 6th man.

If Jefferson wants Tony Allen (weird -- he liked Antoine Walker too), perhaps it makes sense to reverse the SG's, like:

HOU OUT: Cook + Barry + Lowry + Budinger + HOU 1st
HOU IN: Wilkins + Atkins

BOS OUT: Scal + Allen
BOS IN: Barry + Cook

MIN OUT: Wilkins + Atkins
MIN IN: Scal+ Allen + Lowry + Budinger + HOU 1st.

HOU clears $2.34 on the trade + $2.72 with Atkins + waives James White to save $5.89. This saves them about $14 mil. FOURTEEN MIL overrules contracts to second rounders for less than $1 mil.

BOS - do they like the new guys versus the old?

MIN pays a little over $4 mil for this set. Tony Allen reunites with Al Jefferson, and has lots of opportunity. They get two youth, and Lowry could help too. MIN also has TPE's that could handle Budinger, Dorsey, Jermaine Taylor, etc -- any could be used in this trade as well.

Except Houston likes both Lowry and Budinger, and Houston might me bad, so that could be a high pick.

If that's all it takes to get Battier then we may as well just cut boston out of the deal.

Is it hard for you to help out the Celtics as a part-Lakers fan?

That's part of it, but as a wolves fan I consider tony allen and scalabrine to be worthless crap, and Pruitt to be a low-level prospect. I would rather bring in Battier to mentor Brewer. If that's all it takes to get Battier it seems like nearly every team in the league could make a better offer. Damien Wilkins and Chucky Atkins? Really?

Also, if houston did offer Battier and Brooks for Rubio, they obviously think Battier has some value. Seems like a bogus rumor, at least the Houston part of the trade. The Minnesota-Boston part makes sense.

Excepot the fact that we are a rebuilding team. He is old and is on the books for 7.5M next year, two things we want from a rotation player.

It only hurts the wolves if they keep Battier past the trade deadline though. He would definitely have some value around the deadline when contending teams are looking to add a final piece to make a run. I think they would get a better prospect that Giddens, although I have heard celtics fans mention him as Ray Allen's future replacement.

As I mentioned, obviously more would have to be added in.

I get a kick out of how Al Jefferson's supposedly best friends with all former Celtics. Maybe that's his problem? He can't be a dick and hate teammtes like KG did with Rasho and Wally. We'll never be a contender until Jefferson punches a teammate in practice. Never.

I'll gladly sacrifice me as a teammate to get punched. just sign me to a 10 day contract or to a non guaranteed contract and things will work out.

Actually, he was/is good friends with Allen. Its not just cause of the Celtics thing.

I'm not saying they're not besties since 7th, but that seems to be the hang up on EVERY trade, "We can't dump {PLAYER} because Jefferson will get pissed."

I don't care if my teammate is my best friend or biggest enemy, as long as he helps me win.
