I think St.Nick is putting up a false goal that he can't satisfy himself. What would have been a successful outcome?

1. "Didn't get the guy we wanted?" LIKE WHO? WHICH DRAFT PICKS DID WE WANT AT 5 and 6?

2. "Kahn can't sign big name guys and ends up overpaying for the second/third rate FA's on the market." LIKE WHO? WHICH BIG NAMES WERE POSSIBLE?

He's making predictions about next off season. But that doesn't change the fact that...

1. Even if next year's draft class is PG (it's really not)/ Big Man heavy, we'll still probably go best player available and trade away which ever guy doesn't fit. So, if John Wall is the best player available at our pick, and he's considered to be better than Flynn, Sessions, and Rubio, we'll draft him and trade away one, two, or all of the other guys. Same with any of the big men and Jefferson and Love.

2. We have no idea who the Wolves would want in FA next year, who will be available, and what assets that Kahn will be willing to use to bring someone in. Prematurely saying that the Wolves won't be able to sign a first tier guy when we don't even know if a first tier guy will be available is silly.

Can't wait to see Nick's post saying how awful the Pavlovic signing is for the Wolves ...

AK + Koufos to Houston.
T-Mac + ??? to Minnesota.
Cardinal + Blount + Atkins to Utah. ...

How about it Shrink? What do we want from Houston?

I tried a small edit, moving Battier to UTA to fill in for Kirilenko, then ran the numbers.

MIN IN McGrady + Harpring + NYK 1st (29.74)
MIN OUT Blount + Cardinal + Daniels + Atkins (24.80)

HOU IN Kirilenko + Daniels + Atkins (26.53)
HOU OUT McGrady + Battier (30.10)

UTA IN Battier + Blount + Cardinal + NYK 1st (21.58)
UTA OUT Kirilenko + Harpring (22.95)

UTA SAVES: I rank Kirilenko's $17.8 mil second year as very bad, so they have to pay the Knicks's pick to not only move him, but to add a valuable Battier. Utah saves $2.74 this year, but the big savings is in 2010-11 when moving Kirilenko (along with Boozer) puts their total salary at around $44 mil. Not bad since they are at $82 right now. Battier > Kirilenko, and $20 mil > NYK 1st.

HOU takes on Kirilenko's second year, but most of it is paid for with the savings this year:

$3.57 trade
$2.72 Atkins
$5.54 lux penalties
$3.00 lux share
14.83 2009 SAVINGS

Yao is paid through 2011, as would Battier be and Ariza, as well as some youth, so I don't see this deal costing them a key free agent in 2010.

MIN swaps expirings and takes on $7.6 mil, including Atkins waive, but comes out with the NYK pick.
Daniels can be moved for Battier, who can be moved for Harpring. So that's a 1 for 1 for 1, but does the rest of the trade fit under 125% +100K? If so, we could do this early October. If not, it'd be November.

I don't think Houston is getting enough. Sure, the money evens out over 2 years, but they like Battier. I think we have to throw in an asset for this to go through. Houston needs something to hang their hat on, otherwise this deal doesn't do anything for them except change the year they will pay that money. Utah's 1st to Houston and Houston's 2nd round pick to Utah?

Maybe a better alternative would be to include Gomes + Wilkens + Pecherov while taking back a couple of their expiring junk roster spots instead of Daniels + Utah's 1st round pick. That gives them a pretty solid bench SF and saves them a few more bucks + the buyouts. Houston's roster is a mess.

I actually like Pavlovic and think this was a good value signing.

Its not a particularly impressive move, but its not bad at all.

As someone mentioned, no risk, low reward. He's a one year fill-in. Don't think Kahn was intending on impressing anyone, just filling a hole in the roster.
