I agree that trades may be a better way to go about improving the roster. I'd prefer to take a chance on Rip Hamilton however. What he brings to the team defensively trumps what Martin can bring with offense. Plus Hamilton isn't a terrible shooter. Yes Hamilton is older, but I think he still has 3-4 more years before he starts to show his age and can be had cheaper than Martin.

I also support Gay-Love part 2: Doing it in the Great North this Time. Directed by Kurt Rambis, Co-staring Brian "the Janitor" and Stewie Griffin (yes i do see both of them sticking around next season at greatly reduced price-tags.)

2. With only one pick, and none of the "optional salary" guys, we've only got eight players. The minimum number is 13 (12 active, 1 inactive). There's cap holds on the other player slots, which are replaced by real players. Add another $2.5 mil.

Good points. I just went back and edited the 2010 salary post again. Taking these points into account, it doesn't look like we will have enough cap space to sign a max FA contract - even when I put a cap range of 50-54 into account. However, I'm not sure teams besides Miami, NY, NJ will at this cap.

Take a look at this link.... most overrated players in the NBA .... Gay is on it..... don't think I'd want him unless he plays much better this year...

Take a look at his link:

Talks about most overrated players in the NBA.

Gay is #2 on that list

Granger is 5th on that list.

Green is on that list

OJ Mayo is on that list

Wilson Chandler is on that list...

So I'd be very cautious pursuing any of these guys....and especially make sure you don't overpay.

if Granger is on that list than its worthless
Granger probley one of the best young players in the game

NBA-Minnesota t-wolves

that list also said Miller was our most underrated player last year and Telfair and Gomes were overrated and overpaid. Motion seconded that it doesn't tell the true story of whats going on.

Shrink - according to Coon FAQ 14 (bullet 9), the cap hold only applies to a roster of 12. You probably need 13 to play during the season, but the inactive one must not count against the offseason cap. I would assume that since Rubio is a first round pick, that we can use his cap hold to count as a roster spot also in the offseason. I just went back and re-edited my list again with a max of 3 minimum salary (Rookie) players at 0.47 mil each. This assumes two first rounders in 2010 draft.

If I'm not mistaken Max salary is tied to the salary cap

So if the cap falls to $50 million:

In years 0 to 6 it's 25% of the cap

In years 7 to 9 it's 30% of the cap

In year 10 and beyond its 35%

So if the cap is $50 million

a max deal would be $12.5 million, $15 million or $17 .5 million

Most of the major free agents would be in the first two categories [0 to 6 years ($12.5 million) or 7 to 9 ($15 million) years] unless their salaries have already exceeded that level.

So we could still get a max player, unless I'm missing something...??

You are right except that players aren't forced by this provision to take a pay cut. The maximum is either 25%, 30% or 35% of the cap as you stated OR 105% of their current year's salary. A maximum salary for LeBron or Wade would be $15,779,912 x 1.05 = $16,568,908 in the first year with $1.74 mil raises every year.

Of the others you mentioned as potential max players:

Bosh's max 2010 salary = $16,568,908 (7 years of experience, 105% of current salary)
Rondo's max 2010 salary = 25% of cap (4 years of experience)
Josh Howards max 2010 salary = 30% of cap (7 years of experience)
Amare's max 2010 salary = $17.2 mil (8 years of experience, 105% of current salary)
Joe Johnson's max 2010 salary = 35% of cap (10 years of experience)

[edit] If Lamarcus Aldridge doesn't get extended, he will probably get offered a 25% of cap max deal by someone. I think Bargnani and Roy have both already signed extensions, and I'm not sure anyone else in that draft class besides possibly Aldridge and Rondo are worthy of that big of a deal.

I think we ought to build a team around the following players and hire Gary "The No Trash" Cougar to be our mascot.

Stewie - FC
Brian (Cardinal) - F
Kevin Swanson (Love) - FC
Peter (Blake) Griffin - PF
Glenn (Big Baby) Quagmire - C
Joe "Swanson" Johnson - SG
Herbert (Hill) - C
(Alando) Tom Tucker - GF
(Kevin) Ollie Williams - PG

rotation:
PG - Ollie
SG - Joe
SF - Brian/Tom
PF - Peter/Kevin/Stewie
C - Glenn/Herbert/Stewie

I think he's asking for a lecture about the use of statistics in basketball evaluation.

Good dig you are a funny guy....

I only responded to those who said that stats like Wins produced and PER were not useful.

if you know it all..... you are not obligated to read it...

It's difficult to avoid when someone posts half page posts in every thread about the basic concepts of statistics.

For instance, I don't think it's necessary to repeat this same post ad nauseum:

Dont know how much statistics you know...

But stats guys look at things like the correlation between rebounds and wins. ...

[This measures all things being equal, whether more rebounds makes it more likely you will win or not.]

The higher the correlation, the greater the effect of rebounds on wins.

Rebounds and steals, gaining more possessions always has a huge effect on wins.

More possessions for one team means more shots and more points.

all basketball statisticians know this.....

Read the book, "the wages of wins", by Berri, to learn more....
