MIA MIN

First, an Atkins Lament

Seeing Pat Riley talk about how his team really wants to shed $2.8 mil to get under the lux makes me very frustrated we waived Atkins. The correct trade to MIA should have been:

Blount + lotto-protected 1st for Wilkins + Atkins

SAVINGS:
0.85 mil from trade
2.72 mil from waiving Atkins
2.80 mil from lux tax recovered
3.00 mil from lux share recovered
---------
$9.37 MIA TOTAL SAVINGS

For us, it costs us $3.57 mil to buy a lottery protected 1st, which is a decent price. For MIA, they sell one for $9.37, which is a huge bargain.

.. but without Atkins, this one is pretty good.

MIN GIVES: Gomes + Wilkins
MIN GETS: MIA 1st + Kenny Thomas + Donte Green (with trade exception from Etan)

MIA GIVES: Q-Rich + Dorrell Wright + MIA 1st
MIA GETS: Gomes + Wilkins + $9 mil in savings

SAC GIVES: Kenny Thomas + Donte Green
SAC GETS: Q-Rich + Dorrell Wright

WHY FOR MIN: They get a 1st for Gomes. They decide he isn't part of the future, and give his minutes to younger players. Wilkins is a good role player, but wasn't going to get much use here. Donte Green, a 6' 11" SF prospect is worth a look.

WHY FOR MIA: Gomes >= Q-Rich, Wilkins >= Wright, $9 mil >= MIA 1st. I know Wade's pals with Q-Rich, but I think this makes the Heat more competitive, and that's something Wade wants. Saving $9 mil is something Riley wants. Gomes partially guaranteed contract maintains their flexibility for their 2010 off-season plans.

WHY FOR SAC: Nobody wants Kenny Thomas, but teams are actually trading for Q-Rich because he can still play. This may give them a little more trade value to try for a deadline deal - meanwhile they have better players on the floor.

So we are doing this to get Miami's 1st rounder?

How high a pick do you think it will be?

It looks to me that Miami gets the most value, with Sacramento second and us last.

I wouldn't do it.

I'm mixed on this for the Wolves. Talentwise, I think Gomes > Greene and MIA first (likely late first). But Gomes' future here is not written in stone and Greene, although he hasn't shown anything yet, is intriguing as a tall, athletic 3 to play next to Al and Love. We really don't need another late first pick BUT, if we could combine the MIA pick with the UTA or CHA pick and move up, then I'd probably sign off on this.

I assume the MIA pick would just be another piece we could add to improve a sign-and-trade offer for a star player. Gomes is good, but a pick would appeal more to other teams looking to deal a bigger name player in a rebuild with cheaper salaries.

Would the Miami #1 need to be 2011 since they gave us their 2009?

I was under the impression that Sac liked Greene, but I could be wrong. Don't know much about him, except think he's from Syracuse.

Though I normally don't condone this type of thinking, but what would our wing depth look like without Gomes? Pretty rough, right? I'd prefer to wait until close to the deadline to make this deal. We'd have a better idea of where Miami's 1st rounder will be (as will they, Wade could get hurt again...) and we wouldn't have to go as long without Gomes's ~30 minutes at SF.

I like Gomes, but he's not super valuable. He's a nice two way bench player signed to a contract paying him about what it should. Given that we'll probably need to cut him or Brewer, I'd rather have another 1st rounder instead. Green is nice too.

I think Sacramento rejects this. They are in the deepest depths of rebuilding, yet here their giving away a young guy with potential for the right to swap their unproductive, overpaid expiring for a slightly less unproductive, overpaid expiring. I don't see the logic there.

I don't think Sacramento views Greene as a young guy with potential anymore...he didn't even play in their 2nd preseason game ALTHOUGH he was healthy and they think Casspi has more potential on that SF spot. :-?

Personally I feel bad for this guy. He didn't get a fair opportunity in Sactown last season. I mean come on Nocioni got more than twice as many minutes than he got :o

Reminds me a lot of Corey Brewer - long - thin - bad shooting stats

I highly doubt the Heat trade Q-Rich (unless they get a very great deal obviously)

that would only anger Wade more since they're close, then Wade would overreact and not resign with the Heat

No. The Stepien Rule is that a team can't owe first so that they don't get one for the next two year. Once you pay one off, its not consecutive. Also note, you don't have to pay back with your own. For example, MIA could trade away their 2010 and their 2011 1st if they already owned a 1st from another team in either year.

.. and drafted over 20 spots lower, and already traded by his original team.

Donte Green has never showed anything outside of summer leagues. I included him because he seemed to fit, because SAC needed to lose a little salary to cap match and they'd be adding Q-Rich and Dorrell Wright and drafted Casspi, all of whom can both play SF. I didn't think he'd be a focal point for this trade, with players carrying ten times his salary exchanging hands.

If you're right, then the Heat wouldn't risk angering Wade and snub the deal.

But do you really think adding a better player would anger Wade? Gomes is better on both sides of the ball, and is half the price. Wilkins could be a reliable vet back-up. You're right, Wade said he liked Q, but II think Gomes makes the Heat better than Q-Rich. Do you still think Wade would still rather have Q?

No question Gomes is the better player, but would Wade think that's true? In his mind he may think Q is better than Gomes

As of now the Heat are just trying to make him happy

I would do this deal, I could see Kings fans having a problem with it though.
