As long as we are in "asset gathering" mode, I agree thats its best to take the best available player early in the draft.... if we end up with 1, 2, 3, 4 etc.... we take that player.
But we do it with the knowledge with the knowledge that we can't keep
Wall, Rubio, Flynn and Sessions. At least 2 and maybe 3 out of the 4 will have to be traded.
With young draft picks value is often maximized with draft night deals.
[If not draft night you have to keep them through several years of development to get back the same value.]
It would be impossible to give enough playing time to Wall, Flynn, Rubio and Sessions to develop them. [Even playing Flynn and Sessions exclusively at PG isn't ideal. Not enough minutes for either.]
So unless we are sure that Wall for instance will be better than Flynn, Rubio etc we should do a draft night deal. If we are sure Wall is much better, then trade Flynn.
But we can't plan to develop them all effectively let alone keep them longer term.
Same would hold to a, possibly, to a lesser degree if we grabbed a big man. I say possibly to a lesser degree, because if it was someone who could legitimately play both PF and Center, then back up minutes at both possessions would be about 30 minutes, so we could at least develop that person for a trade later.
Again keep in mind if you want to keep a Center, PF or PG long term, it won't work from a financial stand point.
For example, in a couple of years Jefferson is making about $15 million. A rebounder like Love will get about $10 million and that assumes his shot doesn't develop. If he shoots like he did at UCLA, then he is a $15 million a year guy also. If we took Favors and he developed the way we hope, he also becomes a $15 million plus guy. So you have $40 million to $50 million tied up in your front court alone. With cap projected to be $50 million next season, that just doesn't work.
So while I agree if we get an early pick its smart to take the best available, we have to do it with the knowledge that someone will have to be traded....if we take a Center, PF or PG.
For instance,if we had the #1 pick, it might make more sense to trade the rights to Wall, to the team with the 6th pick. Lets assume its Sacramento for grins.
We give them the rights to Wall and they give us Evans and the #6 pick, which we use to get Evan Turner.
Thats the idea anyway...
That would be a great team.
Jefferson
Love
Evan Turner
Tyreke Evans
Flynn/Sessions
and we still have Rubio, Pekovic, Charlotte pick and Utah pick as assets to complete the roster.
A guy can hope can't he?

I just lol @ the guy that said Derrick Rose could be as good or better than Chris Paul. Kind of amusing.

lol all you want.
Derrick rose in a few years will be as good as CP3 is now. His playoff performance was that off brilliance, he single handedly took the bulls to game 7 verse the celtics. Put up some epic performances in those playoffs, tied a rookie post season scoring record. He willed his team to 7 games verse defending champs.
The kid has guts, and will be a top 5 player soon, on CP3's level. Laugh it up, but watch it happen

Chris Paul is putting up the most statistically impressive seasons by a point guard ever, it's highly unlikely Rose is ever as good. Rose may end up being a better scorer, although i'm not completely certain on that because Paul is a damn good scorer, but no way will he be able to orchestrate an offense the way Paul does.

I don't know if I agree with you on this one MnWii. I think we should just draft this guy:

There would be a deal out there for Sessions or Flynn for sure, but like I said that's my dream scenario and highly unrealistic. If you had Wall/Gordon you'd obviously look for an upgrade at the three with one of Flynn and Sessions, preferably a veteran.

Rose is a very good point guard, but he was the 2nd best PG in the Boston - Chicago series.
And the guy who was better - Rondo - is still only 22 years old.
He was also ranked tied for the best on the ball defender with Kobe by NBA GM's.
Quote from paper:
"In a survey of general managers, Rondo was tapped as the fourth best as a perimeter defender and split with Kobe Bryant for the league’s best on-the-ball defender."
Rondo will be the one chasing Chris Paul for best NBA PG, not Rose.
Rondo is a better defender, better rebounder, nearly as good a passer, as good a penetrater. He is a jump shot away from matching Chris Paul as the best PG in the NBA.

Rose is a great player, but he's no Chris Paul, and never will be.

Lets just try to acquire D'or Fisher from Tel Aviv now that Love is out.
He had a terrific game against the Knicks with 19 Pts. and 16 Rebs.
Oh well, I forgot it was only against the Knicks

Clicking on that link literally took me on a half hour detour watching and listening to video after video of "Never gonna give you up". That song is off the chain. hahha. but seriously, where was I?... how did I not know about the RickRoll phenomenon.
Anyway, back to basketball: How will the front court minutes get distributed now that Love is out for the first few weeks? Jefferson can easily play pf so the logical answer might be an increase in Ryan Hollins minutes. But Gomes could play some pf too allowing Jefferson to stay mainly at C. I'm not quite sure how to predict the bigman rotation because there isn't a lot of talent there. Will Cardinal get serious run? Pecherov?

It was just an excuse to post the 15th 2010 draft thread because the other ones weren't enough.

I would suggest...
that no one is forcing you to read...
the valid criticism of your thread ideas.
No need to get
bent out of shape...
I mean honestly, it's not like there's
merit to posting about one subject
in one place...

In my opinion, the Blazers won the Roy/Foye trade

Not really. We were able to trade the more expensive rookie contract of Roy for Foye's cheaper contract AND $1mil. We detroyed the Blazers in that trade.
